Default Worthwhile learning

I have some time to spend on learning some more about computers or software. I have taken A+ so I was wondering what would be good to learn. I'm not looking for IT job just something that would be useful everyday. Something that isn't going to take forever to see some results would be nice.

You should look into C++. C++ For Dummies is an excellent place to start (that's where I did, and I have to revisions of the book, one of which is about half a foot wide - seriously lol).

Is C++ anything like the original C? Like Joker, I sometimes have some time on my hands and wouldn't mind getting back into programming.

C++ is virtually identical to C. The only major change is the addition of object-oriented programming (OOP). Whether you can compile C source code as C++, I'm not 100% certain. I've never tried it.

You'd think it would, wouldn't you? C without OOP is like trying to climb a mountain without crampons and cleats. Possible, but boy oh boy what a pain.

Who writes a decent C++ book on intro, and where can I find a decent compiler, preferferably cheap or maybe - dare I say it? - free.
