Default Why bother watching professional athletes...

...when, being paid millions for being 'professionals' at their choice of sports, act like this:

Basketbrawl at the MSG.

I knew there was a reason why watching professional sports is a waste of time. I know high school kids that act more professional than this!

Same thing with baseball: spitting on umpires. Tennis: wearing skimpy shorts and skirts. Football: grown men grabbing each other's buttocks and tackling each other over a ball...

All pro atheletes are over-paid, under-worked prima-donna's of our society.

Whatever happened to sportmanship? Seen some of the little league games these days? Or the local flag football games? Outrageously poor
conduct by the players, the coaches and thier parents.

(you do realize I was joking about the tennis and football don't you?)

I am a big sports fan, but I would rather watch college sports before pro sports.
I think the athletes play harder when not getting paid outright. We all know that college players get paid under the table.

now what is wrong with that? this is the only reason why I would watch tennis for more then 5 seconds

also for the reasons stated here is the reason why I like the green Bay Packers. They are a people's team, not owned and run by some pompous overpaid jackass and the players play for the game, not for fame and fortune (in most cases)

agreed, same here. I used to like several teams but after the strike, I just lost all interest

I'm a very big sports fan, but am really bothered by the trend in "Look at me" athletes.

Why do guys celebrate a tackle like they just won the super bowl? why do guys celebrate a good play, when they are down by 20 points? why do people have to celebrate in such extreme ways? Its not "showmanship or individuality....its a lack of class.

Its the same in all major sports, but it seems football and basketball are the worst....these clowns have no clue, they act like punks on the playing surface, and thugs off it. Terrell Owens is a great example, constantly whining, constantly telling everyone who will listen that nothing is his fault.....he's a media whore....then he doesn't understand why his name is always in the paper....its because he is always trying to put himself in the spotlight.

All I know, is I laugh my ass off when I see someone like Owens, Chad Johnson, or Randy Moss get crushed on the field, I don't like seeing anyone get hurt, but i love seeing them pay.....and really love seeing them fail.

I'm a huge basketball fan, and while I love it when athletes get emotional and even overly physical (in certain situations), there's nothing positive to be taken from that brawl. And quite honestly, I think Carmello Anthony should have been suspended for the remainder of the season, not just 15 games. He both helped escalate the fight and threw a punch (sucker punch at that), right on the heels of the Detroit/Indiana brawl with Artest. On top of it all, this wasn't an important game for either team, nor was the score close. We're talking about a bottom of the barrel Knicks team getting blown out in the fourth quarter of a regular season game with absolutely no playoff implications whatsoever. And they're not rivals either.

Not that any of those scenarios would excuse the behavior, but there was something a bit more acceptable when Kevin McHale of the Boston Celtics clotheslined Kurt Rambis of the LA Lakers in the 1984 NBA Finals, or when Robert Parish threw a punch to Detroit's Bill Laimbeer in the '87 Conference Finals. It's a different league now though, and instead of seeing emotions getting the best of healthy rivalries in important games, we see thugs sucker punching during meaningless games against one of the worst teams in the NBA. Weaksauce...

It does seem like a lot of the athletes have become punks instead of men.
The thing is we hear less usually about the good ones. There are some guy's with class in the games also but the punks get all the press. I still like football and Paul is right about the NBA things have changed. The old days they might throw a punch but a team mate would pull them off each other or it would be settled on court in other ways. Today both benches clear like a hockey game.

I'm sorry. But after having been repeatedly shot at, pulling my fellow Americans out of a burning helicopter, half a leg missing only to have them ask me to put them on the ground with their brothers, I just can't get into sports any more.

Besides my son's teams. And if my son ever acted that way, I'd kick his ass.
