Default Update on the house...again

As a lot of you know, my house was torn up pretty badly during the tornadoes of March 1, 2007.

Yesterday, our house was inspected by our mortgage company's representative and categorized as 50% complete. The roof has been repaired, 60% of the sheet rock replaced (all of it will be done), 95% of the electrical work is done, all of the plumbing, all the windows have been replaced, the back porch has been framed back in, all the siding is off, so on and so forth.

We have been told by the contractor that if everything goes smoothly, and so far it has, we could be back in our house by the end of June. This is about two months ahead of schedule.

The insurance company has been a PITA through out this whole process. As soon as we're done with the claims process, we will get rid of them. Every single dollar has been scrutinized, items in the house examined to see if they can be repaired and reused. Any overage has taken days to be approved. Heidi and I, in an effort to keep things flowing with the contractor, have given the contractor the go ahead on some things before the insurance adjuster got back to us. A lot of these things would have meant the contractor's workers being idle, and they will only sit idle for a half day. Anything beyond that, and they take on other work. If/when they take on other work, it can take days to weeks to get them back.

We've learned a lot. It's been trial by fire to say the least. Now though, we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Progress now comes in quantifiable leaps instead of painful, trickling rivulets.

Also, my work in training the Army in all things Aviation Life Support has taken on a new urgency as we prepare to take a 5 week course for those already firmly established in the Aviation community to its own Military Occupational Specialty. This will greatly increase the course length and the students, just out of basic, will be challenging to instruct.

I really hope that by the end of August, things will be settled down enough for me to once again contribute to this wonderful community.

Thanks a ton for everything you folks have done for my family and I. And a special thanks to Capper for his efforts and patience.

Tom

Just a quick note to say very glad things are finally moving along and moving at a pace that can be noticed beyond the dead crawl you began with. You have definately been to hell and back to quote Audie Murphy.

Ben seems to be mostly over the nightmares. When the weather turns bad though, you'll see all of us looking at weather.com, the weather channel, etc.

really happy for you guys, and i truly DO hope it all goes smoothly and you're back in there in no time!

yea insurance can be huge PITAs sometimes - ive experienced this first hand more than too many times.

all you can do is take their crap, and/or take advantage of it (like you did in a few situations). i just really hope it all goes well and the new house is that much better than the old one, as im sure it will be! i have faith in fate, and you'll be just great!

good luck, and grats on the progress!!

Good to hear that you're finally getting some major progress on the house - I think you'd agree with me saying it's about time!

I hope everything keeps going well for you.

Hopefully your troops at your school don't shut down and try to become civlians again right after basic gets done. I had a few that tried that with me and had to be brought back to Jesus.
