Super Bowl massacre averted at last minute | EastValleyTribune.com

A distraught Tempe man was within sight of the Super Bowl on Sunday with an assault rifle, but a change of heart kept him from unloading 200 rounds of ammunition on the crowd, court records show.
scary stuff.... one question I had was if they had intercepted the letters then why did they not catch him before hand

Well the post office here in my neighborhood have automated machines that even let you mail out packages. Just gotta pay with CC. Its 24/7. Swipe your CC to get into the post office in after hours. Thats how i do it.

"and a mental health evaluation conducted at his arrest found “no mental defects” that would warrant a commitment to a mental hospital,"

Nice. I guess he just doesn't qualify for being off his rocker.

Because having a manifesto is not grounds for arrest in a free country. Lest, you, me and half the rest of us would be in jail. Heck - I would have turned you in months ago!

EDIT: That was a Joke SB....

More serious - if you read I think they never got the letters of the manifesto - but they did get other stuff END EDIT

Everyone has a point at which they can go over the edge. Sounds like he reached his but still had enough sense not to go all the way like too many others have lately. I'm sure there are many more out there that teeter on the edge all the time.

I was just giving Screwballl a hard time really.

On the one hand we have to allow enough freedom so that you and I can say wacky stuff (and actually be a little wacky) and not have to worry about our phones being tapped. OTOH, having freedom doesn't mean being blind and letting wacky people do whatever they want until they reach the point of hurting themselves and others.

The scary thing is what you said - there are many that teeter on the edge all the time.

I don't know what the police really knew or thought. ANd it is disturbing that he had to actually stop the crazy person (and he was the crazy person).

Even for sane people there is a lot of pressure that is put on by modern society and for those that are a bit out of whack it's a scary thought and it does seem to be getting worse.

According to court records, Havelock is charged with mailing threatening communications in the mailing of eight copies of a “manifesto” explaining the planned massacre.

“I will test the theory that bullets speak louder than words ... I will slay your children. I will shed the blood of the innocent,” Havelock wrote. “No one destroys my dream. No one.”

Havelock on Sunday mailed copies of the manifesto intended for friends and media from a post office at 59th and Peoria avenues in Glendale, but authorities were able to intercept them.

So with words like this, he should have been picked up before he had the chance to even attempt it. It is one thing to have a manifesto to do something... it is another to literally say you will be killing people and being sent to media outlets.

How do you figure? If he mailed them on Sunday and the game was the same day how were they suppose to know where to look or even that he mailed anything?
