Default The Soldier Who Wouldn't Quit

Quote:
On December 17, 1944, the Japanese army sent a twenty-three year old soldier named Hiroo Onoda to the Philippines to join the Sugi Brigade. He was stationed on the small island of Lubang, approximately seventy-five miles southwest of Manila in the Philippines, and his orders were to lead the Lubang Garrison in guerrilla warfare.

As Onoda was departing to begin his mission, his division commander told him, "You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we'll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that's the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you to give up your life voluntarily." It turns out that Onoda was exceptionally good at following orders, and it would be 29 years before he finally laid down his arms and surrendered.
Damn Interesting The Soldier Who Wouldn't Quit

Now these guys were hardcore......I remember watching a History Channel special about this probably 10 yrs ago.

While cool, I could only read 1/2 of one person's story and think they were not just trying, but succeeding, at killing Allied forces.

29 years is nothing when you raise the rebel flag above the South Carolina Capitol. That stood longer than that Axis enemy finally agreeing to the signing of the end on the USS Missouri. The right to rise is still there, over 200 years. That right to rise is still testable today, and has hard core yankees even standing up.

Sorry, but I don't like the stories. Lots will be tossed out more, soon, to make us sorry we're American. If not already...I'm not watching them. All soldiers and marines are proud, of any country. They stand for something. This guy, I wouldn't want around in 1944. Hardcore isn't ignoring what your country agrees to, or he's an ignorant bastard cut off from the info. Given the same freak accident, you'd have a solid American there to tell the same story.

It's your 5th general order, and I agreed to the same. To quit my post only when properly relieved. Pretty much the basis of the Sailor Creed. To pass along to the sentry...well, this guy missed. I'm not relieved yet. Nor are the POW/MIA that are still standing their ground, in it or above it. Can't tell a story very well of the the hard core that have fallen and not just given the command to surrender. If he new of the order, he was defiant of his country.

So logic states ignorance is not hard core; and defiance of a country, nation, or being is not tolerable. He doesn't win anything in my book but being a good soldier. Should be typical.

I didnt really feel that way at all after reading the stories, if anything it made me proud that we defeated people just as determined as him at places like Iwojima and Midway...

Yeah, I think its a little more involved than our General Orders......while the story I linked is incredible, the hour that History Channel devoted to it, including a bunch of video, was incredible......the fact that these guys were basically on their own for more than 20 yrs is something else.

For me, It boils down to certain people say in our very own special forces or USMC... when you have extreme dedication and a low overall education level, we may find some Marine living in a Libyan Jungle from more than 20 years ago... it is possible, but not likely.
when there are tribes in Brazil and islands of the south Asian Pacific that are still living like cavemen and never been contacted, it shows that survival is very possible.

Low education and Marine Corps go together like peas and carrots or bread and butter......SF, not so much, having been through some of the courses myself, and having several friends who have served in SF Groups, they are some of the smartest people you will ever meet.
