Default So what would you do with this dog?

We've had this Pom for 15 years. My daughter was 18 months old when we got her so the dog is older than my son.

Here's the problem though. As much as I've enjoyed this dog, she is crapping every where! She can't hold it. It's always wet, somewhat bloody and stinks to high heaven. The Vet says there's not much you can do with her, it's just her age and anything we do to try and fix her intestines which are leaky from age would be more apt to kill her than help her.

I'm at a loss as some days, this dog is still a spirited one with that puppy like exuberance. Then others, like today, she craps all over and I've spent half the day with the friggin carpet cleaner. These crappy days are more numerous than the none crappy ones.

That is always a very hard, hard decision!! A pet becomes part of the family, and when the time comes to put a pet down, it is always a very hard thing to do.
In my opinion though, you should sit down with the whole family, discuss this real issue, and tell them that the dog is really going to suffer if you don't do something real soon.
I know, the kids will just be completely broken hearted and may even rebel against you for doing such a "cruel" thing, but just bare with it, as it will be a passing thing.

I don't envy you on this man, I have had to do the same damn thing, and it is heart breaking, and kids and in my case kids and the wife, are almost unbearable for some time afterwards.

I just don't like to hear or see a loving animal suffer!!

She has beena part of the family, that's for sure. I think my wife loves that dog more than she does me tbh. I've brought the subject up with her, but then Kimi, the dog, will have 3 or 4 good days where she doesn't have pain and she doesn't crap every where.

Most days when I come home for lunch, I have to use the carpet cleaner.

I'm ready to have her put down and carry on with the other two animals we have. But the wife is going to fight me about this as usual. The kids just want the dog to not suffer. They both love Kimi like I do, but are very practical about what needs to be done.

Default IMO

I know it may sound a little cold, but I would re-assign the carpet cleaning duties to your wife. She may start to understand then?

Personally, I'd get rid of it. But if you want to keep it, why not put it either outside or in the garage or something so you don't have to clean the carpet?

You can't just get rid of a part of your family (although I'm sure Josh's parents might disagree)......especially a dog you've had for so long.
I'd first do as jph recommended and start having the Mrs clean the carpet, then, like a puppy, I'd take the dog outside frequently so it can relieve itself

Isolation... get some sort of pen that the dog stays in when no one is home or the dog is not being watched. Anyone that lets the dog out and doesn't put it back in and it messes the floor, they clean it up...
It is easier said than done but once you put your foot down, they will realize what needs to be done.

My wife gets pissed at me when she asks me to clean up the dog or cat mess when she has been home all day herself and I tell her no because she never bothered to do it herself. You were home, you clean it up.
9 times out of 10 when she will do it and stay pissed at me for a few hours.. oh well

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Default Dog

Boy do I relate to this situation.
Had a Pekiniese for 16 yrs, got as a puppy, 6 weeks old.
Started having about the same problems, no control at all. Had lost an eye to an other dog in a fight,a Rotwiller at that, had lost all his teeth so eating anything hard was impossible, had to get canned food for him. Was having trouble with back legs, couldn't move sometimes. Wife decied to put him in a box one night so we wouldn't wake up to a mess everywhere, was that a mistake, he wined for a couple of hours, didn't want to be alone in living room. Wife finally gave in and moved him into bedroom with the box, he was happy the rest of his life.
He finally had a stroke one day when outside, try as I may he just wouldn't go do his duty, so gave up and had him put down by the vet, hardest thing I have ever had to do. Really tore me up losing him but he is better off now.
