Default Simply ridiculous price from HP

So I need a new HDD for my laptop. The original 80Gb HDD is a 5400RPM drive that is very slow, but is also very full. So I decided to look on Newegg for a new 100Gb drive with a 7200RPM rotational speed. I was pretty surprised to find one for just $86. But not wanting to rule out HP, which so far has done a good job of keeping me happy with the limited issues I've had with this laptop, I decided to give them a shot and see what they were asking for a new HDD.

Can you believe there's a $500 difference?

I cannot even begin to express my disbelief at having seen this.

Notice the NewEgg drive is definitely a huge upgrade over the one HP has in stock.

There is absolutely nothing I can even begin to think of that would make the drive from HP twice the price of a drive from NewEgg. Much less $500 more!

WTF is up with some of these companies?

yeah I have seen that quite a bit from OEMs... a $100 CPU from newegg can run $300-500 at Dell or HP... I was looking for one to help boost the wife's dell (P4 1.8GHz S478? with RDRAM) but nevermind... I will use the hard drive only when the time comes (can't use anything else except maybe sound card).

Thanks HL and Corsair!

That's how they make their money, on upgrades. If you pick an HP with nothing in it, it runs pretty cheap. If you start putting crap in it in no time you're going to over run any custom build in a matter of seconds. :P

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?

Btw quakin, just fyi since i believe you're lookin at it for your zd8k, i had a 100gb 7200 rpm toshiba in my notebook and it ran quite hotter than my hitach 60gb 7200 rpm one. The HD spot for the 8k just sucks for cooling =_=;;

Yeah....I hear ya. I keep my ZD propped up and air flow going over it. Shouldn't be too much of an issue with how I use this thing.

I put together a guide on extending the life of a notebook, which included replacing the memory and the HDD....the differences were very noticeable/ I swapped out a 2GB memory kit with a 4gb memory kit (the notebook would not recognize more than 2.9GB, regardless of the OS....memory remapping feature in the BIOS).

The HDD that came with the notebook was actually a very good 5400RPM HDD. I replaced it with the 7200RPM drive from the same Seagate Series and saw some pretty dramatic results....7-10C drop in temperature, and 9 min more battery life.

Those Seagate drives are excellent, and all are available at Newegg.

That is typical.

I've also had great success in re-building notebooks.

Back when P3 850 mhz was top of the line and Scepter relabeled Compals ... I even lapped the cpu and the heatsink and applied Arctic Silver 5 ... that notebook is still running today. [A friend has both of them]

The nice thing is that the fan doesn't come on ... so the battery life has improved.

I'm sure the reason is that they'd rather sell you a new computer than sell parts for an old one.

Sucker: "How much?"

Zit-faced Best Buy sales kid: "$500, sir."

Sucker: "I'm not sure I want to spend that much on this old machine. Not sure it's even worth $500."

Zit-faced Best-Buy sales kid: "We do have some excellent deals on new laptops now. I'd be happy to show you a few of the newest Vista-equipped models...."

HP is shameless with the pricing.I searched 100GB laptop on eBay and look at the prices there....some are better than the egg even.
