Default Sad Day for my Unit

A guy from my unit was murdered on Friday. You can read the Story Here. I will tell you want the article doesn't say.

Burkett was having an affair with Thornton’s wife while Thornton was in Iraq. Burkett's wife left him because of the affair, and Burkett was given full custody of their Daughter. Burkett was put out of the Army for being a single parent. He went back to Illinois and was staying with Thornton’s wife’s sister so he could be close to Thornton’s wife. Thornton came back from Iraq last month and was in Illinois on leave, when he saw Burkett in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The rest is in the news article.

I knew Burkett fairly well; I wouldn’t consider him a friend but a fellow NCO. He made poor decisions but he didn’t deserve this. I feel sorry most of all for his daughter. He used to bring her to work when he had problems finding a baby sitter. She was a great kid, and some of us in my shop spent quite a bit of time helping watch her through out the day.

The decisions you make in life affect more people then just you.

You don't mess with a man's wife.....I don't care what the circumstances are, but you don't cheat....damn right she should feel guilty. I don't condone killing someone, but I'd have whupped his ass good for doing it.

I had the crappy duty of escorting Court Martialed soldiers for a month once.....one guy was a 1st LT who was having an affair with one of his soldiers wive's. The poor guy could figure out why he was always being chosen for Staff Duty and being sent to the field. He had a friend cover for him one night and caught them in the act...I sat in on the LT's court martial and was sick to my stomach that a man could do something like that.....real scumbag....BTW, he did 5 yrs at Leavenworth, where I'm sure he got more love than he could handle.

Nothing good comes from cheating. I know firsthand what it's like to have a mother that cheated. I really feel for all of the kids, because they most likely were teased about it; now this. Their lives are forever changed by this. To have a tragedy so close to Christmas; these kids are going to need a lot of counseling to help them deal with this and the memories that will come every year.

Being the cheated on spouse isn't easy, but it shouldn't drive someone to murder. For this guy to kill him while the kids were in the car with him, there must be a lot more to this story. I don't ever remember wanting to kill my Ex or his GF, I had a kid to worry about; she could have him.

Cheating is so wrong. If things are so bad that they need to go outside of the marriage; well that's what they make divorce for. Break away from the marriage before someone gets hurt.

Hitman, do you think they'll interview you guys? You may want to speak to someone about it just in case; perhaps the chaplain.

I am not upset about it. I think it's ****ed up, but I won't loose any sleep. Like you I feel for all of the kids involved. It's a shame they will pay the hardest price for the poor decisions their parents made. Now 4 children will be without fathers all because of this.

My unit had tried to put a stop to this affair months ago, but the guy wouldn't listen to us. As he was getting out we had to escort him around so he wouldn't go near this woman. He gets out and moves to her town.

I agree he should have just beaten the guy’s ass. Serving time for assault is a hell of a lot better then serving time for murder.

No one will ask me to testify, but I am sure there are some guy’s in my Unit that will have to testify. Like some of the senior leadership that was involved when the affair first started here in Germany.

There is not a woman in this world worth life in prison. Get a divorce and move the **** on with your life.

If you do decide to kill the guy do it right. Don't stab him in the middle of a Wal-mart parking lot with hundreds of witnesses, and in front of your kids. Drag his ass out into the woods or something damn. Make CSI prove its you. Don't take the shadow of doubt away from the jury.

Never said I thought he was smart. But rage like that can build up
easy as pie and when it explodes, watch out.

Like you folks have mentioned, the kids are going to suffer the worst for this. The guy killed a man in front of his kids for crying out loud. While I wouldn't kill someone for cheating with my wife, he would damn sure get a mud hole stomped in his arse. All sympathy went out the window for him the moment I read his kids were in the car when he rammed the other dude. Then he got out and stabbed him to death right there in front of his own kids. He should rot in hell for that one.
