I think this kinda falls under the whole "duuuuuuuuuh" thing, but at the same time I've gone through this, where saying something is misunderstood, or taken out of context. This is really an issue with the web, not only because of the "face to face" issue....but also cross culture, with language barriers.

NEW SCIENTIST magazine has come up with a theory why it has had such an increase in abusive language on its website.

The magazine rolled out a new commenting facility on all its articles and was stunned by the phylum that people were spitting at each other.
What surprised the boffinish magazine hacks is that people were saying things online that they would never say to someone face-to-face.


While this might be obvious to anyone who has received death threats for writing stories which do not say wonderful things about the latest Apple toy, it astonished the boffins and boffinettes at the rag.


The theory that New Scientist's Michael Marshall has come up with is that people behave rudely because they don't necessarily expect to be taken seriously and the social rules are fairly relaxed.


As comments appear in cold text without important clues and cues like friendly body language, they can easily seem more offensive and the phlegm wars so begin.


If humans reduce their sense of their own identity, they are less likely to stick to social norms. The process was first noted in the phenomenon "suicide baiting" which happens when someone threatening to jump from a high building is encouraged to do so by bystanders.
