Default Quick graphics terminology

Need help remembering a term and how to do it. I have an image, but I want to be able to resize the image without the image getting distorted or blown out when enlarging.

Currently using GIMP because my Photoshop trial ran out on me.

Other useful terms to go along with that are 'linked' and 'aspect ratio'.
