Wal-Mart often just tapes up the boxes and re-shelves returns in hopes of someone just keeping it instead of having to ship it off somewhere. A couple of lowlifes around here have gotten wise to that, and buy those cheapo Emachine computers, strip out things like Memory, Processors, HDDs, whatever, then return them complaining of bad performance or it won't boot or what have you. Wal-Mart then just dumps it back on the shelf in hopes that the next poor sap won't return it and try to get it sent off to the manufacturer themselves or take it to a repair shop.

That's what Fry's Electronics's does frequently. I know numerous people that seemingly got a good deal on RAM, etc. only to find out that it was just defective returned stuff that Fry's just threw back on the shelf at a reduced price.
