Thumbs up PAYPAL!

Everytime I use paypal it seems someone gets my Credit Card #. Last week I had to cancel my CC due to the fact someone was making unauthorized charges on it! I havent used this card for ~ 1 year but when I used it to donate for the quakin fund thru paypal I started to get unauthorized charges to velophone (a UK cell phone co., I live in Texas so I have no use for a UK cell phone). These charges totaled about 500.00.
Do not get me wrong, I am and would never accuse this site of any wrong doing! HArdware Logic never sees CC#. I am just typing this to warn people to be careful when using paypal I don't think it is a very secure place. This is the second time I have had this happen, and each time it was in close proximity when I used paypal.
I will never use that service again.

I opened a checking account specifically for paypal. I have it set so that ANY charges must be approved by me before they go through (the bank calls me).

This way it is separated from anything else that is personal and no unauthorized charges can be made.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I will not use Payenemy anymore. I had a situation where a guy reversed charges on me for $950. PP took the $300 I had in my account and then started their crap about me owing them $650. I asked them to investigate the guy. While they were supposedly doing their investigation, I did some of my own. Found out the asshat worked at a high school as an IT guy/teacher. Once I had his name and address, I called my local police dept to find out if the guy had any previous convictions/complaints of this nature. Found out all kinds of stuff on this dude. Mostly, he was convicted of credit card fraud and child abuse. So I called the school, told them what I knew and he got fired because two of their teachers had had their CC info stolen and he was under investigation by the school board for doing it.

Paypal came back and said the guy was an up-standing citizen and that someone had stolen HIS CC info and I owed them $650. I faxed them the info I had on him, the fact I had filed a criminal complaint through the Ohio attorney general's office and that he was under investigation...yadda, yadda, yadda. PP said to pay them their $650. I told PP to kiss my azz. I will NEVER use them again and have removed all my personal info from their records via court order here in Alabama. This whole process took over 12 months to complete.

Wow! I had no idea they were that bad!

I don't have much cause to use them, but it shows that it is a risk when you do.

because of these stories, this is why I refuse to pay any more than $50 or so through them.. but I will keep it open for the few rare online sales/purchases I may need it for

Boxer sounds like you have some malware or something on your computer.

As to PayPal, the only reason we are using it for the Quake fund is ease of use for me, and for tracking all the donations.

As to Pay Pal in general, i'll never recommend it to anyone for shiopping, especially when it comes to EBay. I've had a few problems with the two, including a person sending me an empty box (I paid $500 for a ES processor). Pay Pal and Ebay would do nothing to help me, even though 7 other people were swindled by this guy in less than a week because he provided a tracking number.....even though that tracking number was fake and I opened the package in front of a Police Officer and the Postal employee who delivered the package.

On another issue, I see lots of complaints from those who have BOUGHT things and paid through PP who find their credit cards suddenly drained and/ or billed multiple times for the same transaction. The answer is simple; PP has very lax hiring procedures, ESPECIALLY compared to the standards any bank would impose on anybody employed in a similar position of trust. But don't forget- PP ISN'T a bank, so they feel no obligation to hire (and, of course, compensate) people as if they were. Unlike the "account freezing" thing, the scams pulled on buyer's credit cards aren't a part of any "master plan" by the company, but simply the work of some dishonest employees who nonetheless have access to ALL of a customer's personal information. Yes, it's scary. Schemes are rampent where a PP employee has a cousin or friend set up an account to receive payments in another name. Since it's an "inside job", these "phantoms" will, of course, sail through the PP application process with flying colors- even if all of the infomation was simply "made up". Then your easily-accessable credit card number is used as payment for phony "auctions" and so forth done through the phantom account. The PP employee who actually approves this transaction might very be the one running the scheme! Given their system and the way the computers are networked together, this is pretty simple for almost any employee to do. Even if you DON'T have access to the PP customer database, you almost certainly have lunch in the break room or visit at the water cooler with someone who does. Many people have been quietly terminated for this (rarely, if ever prosecuted- since this would be a huge black eye for the company), and in reality, THIS is where the majority of PP security and investigative resources go: to policing their shoddily-selected workforce.

this was taken off of the pp sux website and this is what happened both times.

that paypalsucks website seems to be more of an advertising for the merchant whatever site by building up all the bad that comes from PayPal rather than show some statistics. Less than 1% of account holders ever experience any problems using PP. I have had more problems with my bank than I ever had with PP.
I have already decided for safety reasons that I will be closing my PP account, waiting for the money to get transfered to my bank account (3-4 business days)...

Where exactly are you getting the figure of less than 1% ever experience problems?

I have used paypal for MANY years, to send and receive payments. I have no complaints. The couple times that I had issues, and the issues were minor, they went in my favor, all within a reasonable time. I have over 250 personal ebay transactions (most of which I used paypal) for more than 5 years now...

My one time I had an issue on a big purchase, I actually used bidpay, a totally different service... that was a long story but i got my money back after a month or 2...
