Default My Work Related Worries

waaaaaaaaaaaaaah

i just received a call from my supervisor telling me that my workplace almost caught a fire...

to my shock, my supervisor told me the patient i was working with at past 3PM inserting a
Foley Catheter Foley catheter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia to penis... he accidentally turned
the nozzle of the Foley Bag on dripping to the floor a good amount of urine... being
humble i didnt go home immediately and change his clothes and wipe the floor, and gone home

without knowing and noticing that a sufficient amount of urine got to the electrical part of
the bed, and the Fire Alarm was sounded as i was stepping out of the facility, not concerning
myself to the fire department coming into the street since i know they have sufficient manpower to deal with minor things or its just a drill...

then as i entered my apartment my phone rang, and as my supervisor describe it in the
phone i get chills on my back, and now i have know idea if i'll be suspended/repremanded/terminated by monday... pray for me guys, its not like i want to
burn the only place i work to dust...

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Hal

If it were me, I would have immediately gone back into the building. If it were a real situation, hundreds of people could have needed some help evacuating.

You talk about this patient, urine (a highly conductive liquid) and electricity. Yet I noticed absolutely nothing indicating you are concerned for the patients welfare over your job.

How is the patient?

???? well part of me was forced to work coz noone else can take the abuse of this psyche
patients... when i say abuse is the continues barrage of manipulation and verbal cursing and belittling... hay, i was actually doing great in my work until this thing happened...

none the less the room was empty when i left... coz the patient was rushing me so he can
go get his coffee and cookies for 3:30PM snacks....

and when it comes to coming back to the facility after i stepped out, is out of the question... i did that once and i was scolded by my administrator, they saying that if
something happened to me during such emergency they'll have to take the laibility, blah blah blah, that its against POLICY they said. sigh

in any case, Quake, sorry but dont get your judgment over so quick, coz if i dont care
about the patient i could have just ignored his plea of unable to urinate and painfull
supra-pubic area [The area immediately above the pubic bone] bulging, since its
past my worktime, and the next nurse is already responsible for him. and to add to that
i did even wiped the urine on the floor dress him up with new fresh set of clothes even its
not part of my job descriptions....and all of this after a hard round of work already...

okay i'm guilty of not being able to see the urine that went under the bed, nor noticing the fire alarm at the last minute when i already step out the facility...

also guilty of not knowing its my fault the mishap happened... sigh

i already felt the guilt but please dont pass judgment over me, because i work my a$$
that day... and it may not show but i have big concerned over my patients. and its not
my fault his condition dont allow him to remember my constant reminder on how to use
his Foley Bag... sigh.

none the less i hope i dont get terminated from work...

edit:
did i metioned i was the last one around in my team to step out since its pass my worktime?
and i got no other help since the next shift is preparing for the work load ahead of them.

Sounds like the supervisor needs to take control of his staff and not put them in harms way........ My wife has had issues like this in her medical field where staff are expected to do things that are not safe.

Good luck mate

i just heard from my supervisor, and she said that the bed caught fire and the air pump
mattress wiring was the cause of fire, apperatly it shorted and that the maintainance
people was fixing it this morning and was not able to finish it.

none the less i'm still part to blame i think, i just hope and pray that i dont get the
boot from the work...

my patient was fine and was tranfered to another floor due to lack of room to let him
stay. other than having 40 bed floor of mentally challenged patients with only
5 aids 1 charge nurse and 1 supervisor, something will be overlooked, having 1 charge
nurse that overlooking the 40 patient 5 aides and adding the workload, its just not
sufficient enough to finish task.

i just hope and pray that nothing happened to my patient and that i dont get
terminated before my contract finish. its probably a sign for me to choose another
field of nursing. well, i only stayed at this job because of the patients and family really
appreciating all the help i gave them, it just feel so warm when you see them happy
with your service as a nurse.
i guess

So I guess if I said Aw Piss On It that would be in bad taste?

OK, seriously I know where you live and assume you work close by. I don't envy your chosen profession, especially where you are. Yes, the patient is important and number one and yes, hospitals can be funny about the liability thing.

Yes, urine can be and is highly conductive which is why I never prescribe pissing into a wall outlet.

Now before you go freaking out there are some questions needing answered. Was this your fault directly or was this the fault of open or improperly secured or maintained equipment? Hospital beds like everything else are designed to be fault proof. Well at least splash proof. Hospital beds as everything in the room should be GFI protected so I guess the first question was why there was no GFI trip before things went to hell?

Now if in fact something really bad happens because you were negligent then hell yes you can expect consequences. You deserve the consequence. I just think it is unwise to jump to a conclusion before a full investigation is complete.

Just My Take
Ron

Damn you Ron, you beat me to it.

Hal, you are a great guy, and I think they would be short a valuable team member if they let you go. You are showing that you accept blame, and feel terrible about the incident, regardless of where the fault lies....your concern is with the patient first and foremost, and thats a testament to you as a person.

On the flip side, there is no such thing as an accident anymore, there is always someone to blame. Make sure you go into work with a clear mind, don't be defensive, but be honest, and stand your ground. Make sure whoever is making the decision on your future understands how much you like your job, and how much you care. whatever you do, don't go in there being defensive or making excuses.

Fire alarms, hospital with mental patients, IDK, you tell me why I, and the large majority of the people I know, would have turned around and walked right back in there to see what was going on.

The patient is the first concern. The way the accident happened is the second. Ensuring the right protocols are put in place, owning up to any fault in the matter and making sure it doesn't happen again all falls into place on down the line.

For Halut to hopefully NOT lose his job over this, I wanted to get him thinking in the right direction. Am I brusque in my delivery? I guess so and if I offended Hault, I apologize.

Egotistical? Perhaps to some.

Halut....not judging you. But I was very curious as to your frame of mind.
