Default Joe Gibbs' NASCAR nightmare - Caught cheating

Unreal. It would seem that anyone will go to any lengths to win, including the Joe Gibbs racing team:

Joe Gibbs NASCAR racing team caught cheating at Nationwide

Quote:
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP)—The two Joe Gibbs Racing cars that have dominated the Nationwide Series this season likely will face stiff NASCAR sanctions after team members were caught deliberately trying to mask the horsepower in their powerful engines.

NASCAR inspectors found magnets under the gas pedals of the No. 18 and No. 20 Toyota’s when the cars were sent to the chassis dyno following Saturday’s race at Michigan International Speedway. Tony Stewart finished third in the No. 20 in his final Nationwide race for JGR, and Joey Logano was seventh in the No. 18.

The two cars have combined to win 14 of Toyota’s 15 victories in 25 Nationwide races this season. To temper the domination, NASCAR last month ordered all Toyota teams to cut about 15 horsepower in their motors.
Joe Gibbs, of course, naturally denies any such knowledge that his racing team was doing this... which I find hard to beleive. As competitive as NASCAR is (if Danica is any indication), trying to eke out a few more HP by tricking the Dyno is just another example of how professional athletes continue to sully their reputations and their sport.

They need to remove the limits and let the most daring and willing to accept the risks win.

removing limit's won't help.... that'll just get people hurt and killed. And it'll definately help remove the driver from the focus....

Those must have been some badass magnets though.

Nascar would be more popular than ever.

Too many good drivers have died already in that sport to let that happen. Realistically, if they back off on saftey at all, it's not going to go well. (as it should be).

A lot rats in wheels have died due to the search for medical cures but that doesn't make me enjoy the end result any less.

I just can't get excited about NASCAR. It's just so boring (same goes for Indy) watching them drive in circles around those huge ovals. I do enjoy their circuit track events (which they only seem to have like two of each season). I really enjoy GT, F1, rally, and other motorsports where the scenery actually changes.

I love watching F1 on Eurosport when I'm in Finland. They get way into it. Probably because Mika Häkkinen is one of the best. But yes, F1/Rally are my favorite gasoline powered things to watch on TV

Magnets? How does that help or hurt the board?

The rules aren't clear. Only chassis and body style is firm. Magnets? It says "No magnets under the peddle"? I have no idea how that aids or is unfair.

NASCAR is losing it's roots. It's not stock cars, no part is even close to what you buy at the lots...and the Car of Today solidifies that they are a new breed. They don't drive the market, and nothing they do trickles out to the car lots. NASCAR is a step up program. You drive bombers and many other models in hopes of some day making it to the big time. But you stall now by the influx of F1, Euro, and Kart champs...no Bomber dirt trackers make it anymore. It's a sign of the need for a new name...not "NASCAR".

This is a world wide upgrade plan that NASCAR does not follow. Everyone but NASCAR brings stars up from lower ranks, not free agent type trades.

NASCAR rules, yet it's not NASCAR and stinks.
