Default Inflation rate is worst in 17 years

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Higher costs for energy and food last year pushed inflation up by the largest amount in 17 years, even though prices generally remained tame outside of those two areas. Meanwhile, industrial output was flat in December, more evidence of a significant slowdown in the economy.
Consumer prices rose by 4.1 percent for all of 2007, up sharply from a 2.5 percent increase in 2006, the Labor Department said Wednesday. Consumers felt the pain when they filled up their gas tanks or shopped for groceries. Prices for both energy and food shot up by the largest amount since 1990.
In a second report, the Federal Reserve said that output at the nation's factories, mines and utilities showed no growth in December, adding to a string of weak economic reports showing that the economy was slowing at the end of last year.
That weakness has shown up in the biggest one-month jump in unemployment since the 2001 terrorist attacks and billions of dollars in losses at many of the country's biggest financial institutions. Citigroup Inc. reported Tuesday it had suffered a $10 billion loss for the last three months of 2007, reflecting bad bets on investments backed by subprime mortgages.

It worries me that people are either ignoring all the signs of a recession, or even depression....and that all these News programs are talking about how good the economy is.

and we all know that if a Dem is elected that all the news outlets will start claiming when the economy does pick up that it is due to the Dem in office, not what the current administration and houses did to fix it (or the tax breaks that helped bring it out of its slump)....
it goes back and forth... oh well

All of these politicians are to blame no one more than the others.....if they could even attempt to work together and solve our countries ills, we might be ok.....as it is now, it all might be too late.

Yup and Yup again!

If a Dem gets in ... the republican re-structure will show strength ... "Growth" will explode and it will all go away till later.

I would like to see integrity in office some day. However ... whom ever gets in must radically affect change in the arena of "Growth" or this recession will get deeper.

A larger tax base, a shared tax base, through immigration efforts and trilateral commission efforts ... a green movement to stimulate the need for greater consumerism in the auto and new industries ... a profitable war ... all of these things have been pushed on us and will eventually be needed ... so we will actually as a people ... we will want them to happen o support our way of life ...

Whoever gets in power must make adjustments to this "Train Wreck" in the best interest of America ... I just hope they have vision to turn us away from "forced trilateral agendas" ...

Sad thing ... if they do ... their likelihood of being assassinated becomes much higher.

>.> Signs? We pretty much are in a recession. We'll eventually hit a trough, or depression, and bounce back into a boom just like always. It's a never ending cycle that the economy and businesses alike constantly goes through.

What's funny is the length of time of the depressions are usually correlated with whether the gov't steps in or not. In the great depression, the gov't tried to aid everyone, which is believed to have both helped the economy a little while prolonging the depression for as long as it did. In the 80s we had our worst depression ever, however it only lasted about 2 months because the gov't did nothing.

Also, you think we got it bad, think again:

I donnu, Obama is pretty conservative for a Democrat, I think he could manage the economy decently.

Clinton on the other hand..... *shudders*

Panda Man - you had me until the last post. Obama is just too inexperienced (not that I'd ever vote for him). Dems would be bad, but many Reps aren't much different (Huckabee or McCain, for example) on economy.

Personally I like Fred - good values and principles.
