| HL's Technomancer | What exactly makes these so expensive? 2GB flash chips are dirt cheap and as small as ever now, you could make an array of 64 chips (32 on each side of the PCB) with a SATA connector for way less then they're charging for that. Unless I'm missing some huge vital part of the picture here that makes it worth it's $3k. |

yea, that does seem overpriced for what it is. But I would still want it! Could it be because it uses SATA and not the wierd formfactor? or do all the other SSDs use it too? | |

| There's also a few other things you overlooked, Stormcrow (don't take this personally). First, how would you design a controller chip that controls 64 other chips? That's not very easy. Further, that's at least a grand total of 65 chips on a PCB. That leads to a very unreliable drive, IMO. If one chip fails, there goes the reputation of the mfgr. (hehe, mofugger) and one rich bastard is going to be really unhappy. Also, looking at the cheapest 2GB flash card on Newegg, it's going for $16 shipped. $16 times 64 chips equals one kilobyte of cash. Paying 300% of the "manufacturing" cost is really not that bad. Lastly, it's supply and demand going on. It's a new product, people want it, it works, and there's not many to go around. $3K is on par with most other hot-new toys. | HL's Technomancer | No, nothing personal taken because frankly I have no idea how SSD's are manufactured. Thats why I said if there was something vital I was missing. ![]() You're looking at the already assembled flash drives though, I'm guessing that the actual storage chips inside of them are a lot cheaper then the ready made and packaged drive. That might be interesting, find out what capacity each chip is in the SSD and find the cost of each one as bought by the manufacturer. I know those high capacity flash chips are crazy high, but thinking on it the more you add to anything the more you increase your risk of failure. |

| Wonder what kind of warranty it has? I would be needing a "we will kiss your arse real hard for 5years strait" as a minimum warranty for that price and with that many chips that could fail in there. Last edited by Tech Geek Deluxe; December 29th, 2007 at 22:53. |

| Functional Alcoholic | This is a perfect example of why you need to let a technology mature before you buy it. Give it time, and you will see larger capacities for a fraction of the cost. |
