Default Ford Truck Question

Hey guys, I'm working on fixing up a 1987 Ford Ranger XLT, the problem I'm having now is that the clutch is not catching/engaging. I was wondering if anyone knows any semi-easy ways to get at the clutch linkage?

Well I am not real sure on that model, but hopefully Fasttazz will see this post and let you know!!!
He is a pretty serious Ford guy, so I am pretty sure he will be able to answer you on this issue

Ah okay, good to know.

Another question, on the ranger the fuel, temp, and oil pressure guages to not work at all, the only one that does is the battery gauge, any ideas on that?

As for the guages; check your sending units, it wouldn't surprise me if they were all bad. You can always check the connection behind the guages, as well as the fuse that controls them.

Well If I had to take an educated guess, I would be willing to bet it is the regulator on the back of the gauge cluster!!!
Fords have a little voltage regulator on the back. It is a little rectangular metal box, about an inch long, and a 1/4" or so wide that plugs into the cluster.

Hmm...Interesting, I'll have to check that out. Any tips for removing the cluster, it seems to be stuck on the speedometer side. Is there a really taught cable keeping stuck, do I have to go under the dash to detach this cable, that is if there is even a cable there?

@ranger, no, the gauges were dead even when we had the keys

Leadhead, the speedo cable is attached to the cluster...nothing special to get it out.

As Ranger said check the fuses and sending units.

The clutch linkage is on the left side of the tranny, if you remove the inspection cover from the tranny you should be able to see if the throwout arm is alaigned and attached....if it is have a buddy help push the clutch pedal in and you crawl under and look in the inspection hole to see if the pressure plate opens or moves at all.
There should be an adjustment-rod down by the bellhousing.

Good luck with your truck.....post back your findings.

Well I crawled under the truck today with a utility light, and had my friend push the clutch repeadtly, I didn't see anything moving, particularly because I have no idea what I'm suposed to be looking at. I recognize the bell housing of the clutch, transmission and the transfer case. I don't quite understand what you mean by inspection cover, I saw a little rectangular plate held on by a bunch of tiny bolts on the bottom of the tranny. Is that what your talking about? If it is, and I take that off, would the transmission fluid leak out, or is that seperate?

LeadHead can you take any pix in reference to the .........

"I don't quite understand what you mean by inspection cover, I saw a little rectangular plate held on by a bunch of tiny bolts on the bottom of the tranny"

It is located right behind the engine oil pan, it covers the lower section of the bellhousing....the area that is not bolted to the back of the block...below the block.

If its hydro clutch the clutch slave might be worn. I dont recall if that year was linkage or hydro or cable.

follow the "linkage" that comes thru the firewall, down by the pedals.

hope this gives more for you to look at.
