| For those that were in the military, or continue to serve, what was your most memorable FIGMO? Mine was being handed orders for a one year tour to Korea two months after I got back from a 120 day deployment to Turkey in 1999. |

| Coming back from 7 months in Iraq (first war), and returning about 45 days later for another without warning. During that month, was married and attempting to get my bride moved over to Germany etc. Lost a lot of faith in the Army over that one. | Functional Alcoholic | Lets see, in 2000 I was deployed to Bosnia for 6 months, I was back for about 6 months when my ex-wife handed me separation papers, the very next day I came down on orders for Korea. Spent 2002 in Korea, came back early 03, 90 days to the day after getting back from Korea i was on a plane to Iraq. Spent a year in Iraq, got back in April 04 and by June 04 I had Orders for Germany. So I have spent the last 7 years bouncing all over the world. |

| Nehalem | I went in a month after graduation on July 2 of 1982.They shipped me to Ft.Jackson SC for a week of inprocessing, that turned into 2 weeks of living in hell (way to hot there). Then was thrown on a bus, thrown on a thing with wings and kicked out over Georgia,at a place from Hell called Ft.Benning. I spent a little over 3 months there learning how to kill people. While I was there we had 2 changes in drill Sgts. That last one I had,was a black man from my state. The rest of OSUT went very well as him and I got along great. He was a good man and didnt like to raise his voice. After graduating OSUT,I was told that they needed a couple guys to stay there and train to be drill cadets.I was all for it,now that I had been chiseled into quite the young man.Well it ended up,I was enlisted into the reserves and had other orders.I signed up for active duty,(my recruiter messed this one up) or so I thought I did. Anyway,I had to get shipped like a UPS freight box back to Pa. While my MOS was a 11C10 mechanized mortor maggot,we went for 2 weeks a year to locals such as Ft.Pickett,VA...Ft. Drum,NY.. In the middle of my 6 year hitch,I decided to change my MOS and asked for a mid service transfer. After recieving an ok and new orders,I was ordered to report to repair parts unit/warehousing electronics etc.The unit was another 30 minutes from my house so it was no big deal. The unit was also comprised of men AND women!!! We had some awsome times on 2 week camps. One of the destinations was Red River Army Depot in Texarkanna,Texas. That was probably the most boring place to work for 2 weeks, but the night life was amazing.I finished my duty in 1988 and took my Honorable Discharge.I would suggest the service to any healthy young man or woman.I think they all should have to do a year right out of HS just to get them headed in the right direction,IMHO. I know that will cause big debate with some, but it is MY opinion, nothing more. In all,I am very proud to have served these United States and would do so again if need be.The training taught disipline, respect, and responsibility, something you dont see much anymore in our youth ,that will someday be running this great country. And as always,God speed to the troops. NOTE: please dont take me wrong about calling other states hell,LOL...I hate hot places, nothing personal. Last edited by oldman_gamer; February 12th, 2008 at 07:29. |

| Colonel Calamity | I agree, although I never did any service time myself, I still believe in it and believe that all men and women should do minimum 2 years right out of high school just for a foundation and cut down their little attitude. The only ones that can catch a break are those from farming communities or low income families where their income is needed to keep the family alive. Also with a legitimate medical excuse (serious health or medical issues like asthma or worse, not this ADD and ADHD crap) they should be allowed an exemption. Otherwise from middle to upper class, all should be required a minimum 2 years. Only those that decide to stay past the 2 years would be the ones that would get shipped off overseas or alternate orders, otherwise there should be camps across the US for the 2 years. This is my personal opinion and really do regret that I never did jump on the 4-6 year mission when I had the chance. Of course if I had, I would not have my 2 wonderful daughters. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |

| Hey oldman gamer, were you at Harmony Church or Sand Hilton? I went through A-2-2 in the Church back in Jan 81. I hated Benning back then, but have loved it every since (other schools).
