Before there was FF, Opera, Mozilla, et al, IE reigned supreme; you had no choice but to use it, Netscape notwithstanding. All these other web browsers today only expanded on what IE began.

Hmm...? I'm pretty sure Netscape was the dominant browser for a very long time, until MS started pre-installing IE on windows and integrating it with explorer. Firefox/Mozilla was an offshoot of Netscape, so you can't say everything started with IE

Keyword here was "notwithstanding"...

I'm a big FF fan, although there are times I'm forced to use IE (which just makes me love FF more).

I would like to check out "Flock", it looks to be a promising browser with many of the same benefits as FF.

Same here, I try not to use IE but at work I have to. Except now thanks to FF Portable I can use FF on the DL at work. Just a hint on the FF portable, it does not have to be installed on a flash drive. You can run it right from your HD, since you don't have to have admin privileges to install it, you can run it from anywhere.

NCSA's Mosaic™ wasn't the first Web browser. But it was the first to make a major splash. In November 1993, Mosaic v 1.0 broke away from the small pack of existing browsers by including features -- like icons, bookmarks, a more attractive interface, and pictures -- that made the software easy to use and appealing to "non-geeks."
The base for all the browsers is found in an old program called Mosaic, from there Netscape was born and IE soon followed after. In the early days it was great watching Netscape and IE duke it out, but then Netscape decided sueing was better than actually making a good product and the eventual buy out by AOL.

I have tried Firefox, Netscape, Opera and IE. In the end I keep going back to IE. The others have neat features but IE just works well. It may not be the best at anything, well it is the best at site compatability. However it also does not require me to download 20 add-ons to make it functional and does not cause strange site renderings and has never crashed on me, I can crash FF at will.

However in the end the choice of browser is like the choice of a mouse or keybaord, more a matter of personal taste than actually better technology.

Ya know, Ed, I tried FF, but could not get used to it. At school I have to use IE, so that's what I use. Blame the US education system.

at first i was skeptic about FF, then here comes the intrusions coming from IE, i find IE not sufficient for my everyday need... that IE makes me use extra popup blockers, and threats are all over...

well with FF, i only have one crash on ver.1.* i think, i cant remember the ver, it happened 6 months ago... then after that it was smooth sailing...

i only use IE for windows update....
