Yes I hear of this all the time. And I hear it all the time from customers I talk to (calling it "foxfire" just as in this note).

I am yet to understand why nearly EVERY semi computer literate individual or below thinks that its called "Fox Fire" as opposed to "Fire Fox".

I guess I see it a bit differently. In the Military, we aren't technically allowed to use Firefox. People do, but that's besides the point.

The kid was told to use IE and he was being disrespectful by not following the rules. Is the teacher ignorant of the fact that FF is a much better browser than IE? Maybe. Maybe not. However, if school rules are to use IE and not other browsing programs, the teachers knoweldge, or lack thereof, is moot. The kid should have been following rules and the teachers guidence. He didn't, so off to detention. He got what he deserved.

I agree with Quakindude. The teacher may not have necessarily been against Firefox but was forced to enforce school guidelines which the kid had not followed.

Quake's right - the rule might be ignorant, but the kid still has to follow them. There are other ways to bring Firefox to the attention of the school.

And don't feel bad folks, my wife calls Firefox Mozilla. It drives me crazy, but she refuses both to change the name or use it, unless she's on my PC. There she doesn't have a choice!

Someone needs to get ahold of these school districts and explain the need for security that Firefox gives. Start with your local school district!
