Default Delivered my sister's new system today

Well, she came to me actually, to pick it up.

She and my mom came up for the day (a 250 mile drive for her), so I could show her around the new system, and she was very impressed by what she saw. She's just so amazed that I could do this for her.

Well, at one point I thought she was going to end up going home empty handed. While I was showing her some of the finer points of her setup, I wanted to show her how the multi-card reader worked. To my extreme dismay, when I put a memory stick from our camera into one of the ports, the card wouldn't read and the system all of a sudden wouldn't read any of the four drives that represented the reader.

So now I'm bent down in the case removing the reader cable and reseating it a few times, and trying both available inputs with no luck. Now I'm frustrated and wanting to give up on this issue for now, and I start showing her the case mounted USB ports. I plug our camera into one, and I get the "USB device not recognized" message. Same thing when I put the camera on the other port. Now I'm starting to worry. I tested all this stuff before and it worked fine. So I try plugging things into the USB ports on the Mobo, where I find that only two of the four ports seem to work. It's looking like only 2 of 6 total ports work. We start talking about RMA'ing the case and possibly the Mobo as well, since there were some known issues on the board with the DIMMs.
I kept it quiet, but I started to feel really awful and nearly physically ill at the thought that they might've come all that way for nothing.

My sister decided we should take the reader out and either replace or return it. So I removed the reader. I put the system back on, and out of curiosity I start testing the front ports again. First one works now, and then the other. And then the two previously non-functioning ports on the Mobo now work. It would seem that the reader was having a problem working all together and was shorting out the other ports too. I put devices on every port at once and got positive results. I then got a standing ovation because I fixed the issue. I felt much better too. We're returning the reader for a refund. She just thought it would be cool to have, but it's not critical for her setup.

This was my day.

If it's not fixed, then don't broke it!

Had a similar problem with one of them cheap card readers a couple of years back on a new system.
The biggest problem was, it was a paying fricking customer, and he was standing right there like your sister was
Talk about getting red in the face and starting to sweat

thats why I prefer the external readers for your specific card or taking it directly from the camera if possible.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

cool thanks!

I have tried all sorts of internal and external readers and cameras and found one thing, I always get the best performance from a dedicated external reader (dedicated meaning it will only take 1 or 2 specific cards).
As these readers try to read from more and more cards, it is splicing all those connections into one interface and runs a much higher chance of one wire or etch completely messing up the whole device.
Look at reviews for these type of devices, most of them say they work but not very well (at best) or don't work at all (worst).

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I agree Screwballl! Some of the ones you see now are "20 in one" readers
Like anyone is going to have 20 different cards
The external that I have is a 4 in one, and it works great! I have had the thing for around 4 years, and it has never burped once
