Default CompUSA going under

Sounds like they might be closing up shop soon.

Quote:
So we've heard enough banter about CompUSA being on its last legs and possibly shuttering completely after closing more than half the chain's stores earlier this year. Well, chalk this up to rumor (in fact, rumor with prejudice if you must), but we're privy to a high-level internal email competitor Best Buy recently circulated which claims to have it on authority (but not "verified") that CompUSA's holiday revenue is half what it was last year (which, as commenter Hans points out, might have to do with those store closures), store-restocking shipments are not being scheduled past February, and additional liquidators are being called in to help manage closure of the 103 remaining stores. Sure, it could be a sneaky misinformation campaign -- or it could be the truth. We gave CompUSA a ring, and their PR team has yet to respond to the claim; but for what it's worth, if we weren't already hearing this kind of thing elsewhere (or didn't believe it plausible) we wouldn't waste your time.

I can't say it would surprise me. They closed a local one this past year when they closed 50% of their stores. Made for some great deals. Although around here we have no shortage of Best Buy & Circuit City their biggest compeditor was a chain called Micro-Center (Micro Center Online | the center of .computer shopping) which is a hell of a great place. Next to the Egg when I want it now I love Micro-Center. I think there is maybe one Comp USA remaining in the general area.

The one they closed was in a sweet location as Beachwood, Ohio is not quite a poverty area. Affluent with money. Problem was the place sucked. Very poor help and service. Eight miles up the road was the Micro-Center with great help and service. My guess was that store shutdown because it failed to generate revenue. The market share was there but the place failed to produce.

Well if they die, more great sales and liquidation.

Ron

Their main problem is prices. Although Best Buy isn't any better.

It went official over the weekend - Gordon Brothers gobbled up CompUSA and plans to sell some of the stores and close the rest after the holiday season. If you're local to one of them, it'd be worth dropping in and seeing what deals you can snag on liquidation.

Yeah, it's pretty safe to say that most enthusiasts will be happy to see them go. I don't think anyone who actually follows the goings on of the PC world closely would ever set foot into their doors (except out of desperation...we've all been there lol)

Hey, maybe the "going-out-of-business" sales prices will make it worthwhile to set foot in the store? Any idea if they're gonna' try to sell off inventory, or will they just close the doors and bring in the liquidators?

My guess is they'll sell off the inventory, just like they did a year or so ago when they underwent massive closings. I picked up a few odds and ends during that time.
