Can we please get rid of American Idol?

We're looking at some videos on YouTube from American Idol, and I just think this show needs to go. My wife was reading some article about the show, and how people involved with it admit that it's more focused on looks than on real talent (Big surprise, there...). We were looking at a performance by this Sanjaya Malakar guy, who's supposed to be one of their top picks, and truth be told - he sucks! But he's got 11 year old girls in the audience - who don't know what talent is anyway, crying as if they are watching Elvis or someone like that. And then there were vids of a girl named Lakisha who, while overweight, has a beatiful voice and a lot of talent. She sounds just like Donna Summer, same range and all that. Malakar sounds like what you hear at a bad karaoke show after he's had a few. But hey...he's got the look, you know...

To me, this is just wrong, when we glorify good looks only on a show that, IMO, should be trying to find truly talented people who would be a pleasure to listen to. People that could make America proud of the hidden talent that is out there. Oh, wait...what was I thinking? Besides, when you buy the CD/download the song or whatever, you don't see them anyway, so what difference does it make what they look like? I always thought you bought music for what it sounded like. Oops, there I go again... If I were on that show, and Simon what's-his-name gave me a hard time, wouldn't the country be shocked when I go over and kick him in his head?

i'm with you with this one... although i'm amazed with Dolittle's voice... neverthe less this show are getting to be a headache they barely have people that have talents, uses the show to humilates and mock people that is less gifted in music... whats the point of screening???

What are they trying to screen out? Talent? I admit, I don't watch the thing (can't think of anything I'd rather watch less), but I think it's a useless show just the same if all they care about is looks. Why don't they just get Paris Hilton on the show? Then they'd be all set! All looks (?) and no talent.

American Idol always picks people who can't sing or maybe America in general can't sing... Everyone who dreams of becoming something go to that show and all the judges ,the black guy, the drunk drug addict lady paula, and simon the ass, KNOW that they suck, but they still complement them just to keep the show going. It's for people to waste their money on text messages to vote and its just a garbage show anyway. The only one who ever really made it was kelly clarkson but that's not saying much either. Lol how about Britney Spears cutting her hair? Now that's a good one. She also tried to commit suicide!! Crazy Crazy

Would you beleive I've never seen an episode of that show? I don't even know when it comes on. If it ain't sci-fi, fantasy or action oriented it really can't hold my attention. I think TV viewing time is more well spent on History Channel and Discovery.

I like discovery channel - a good show is MYTHBUSTERS... They got some interesting things that will keep your eyes glued to the tv

Like I said, I can think of other things I'd rather watch, most of which are on the Sci-Fi channel (at least when they aren't showing one of their own B movies) or TV Land, Nick At Nite...one of those. There's also that show on Dicovery that profiles all the really huge ships and machines and other really big stuff...can't remember what it's called though. Otherwise, TV is such a waste of time.

We watch it around our house. With two teens and my wife all demanding the TV be on for Idol, I've got to admit I like watching it now.

There's a website out there that encourages people to vote for the worst candidate. This website's intent is to put the worst possible person as far into the season as possible. Couple that with Sanjaya's appeal to the little girls and there's a recipe for mockery. I personally think Sanjaya would prefer that boys like him over girls, but that's just me talking.

The singers that come out of AI are, for the large part, very talented and successful music entertainers. While the show was created as entertainment and to make money, the side benefit is that someone who was a burger-flipper, waitress or soldier can eventually end up achieving their dream of being a paid performer.

I think either Lakisha or Melinda will win it this year. Lakisha is better than Melinda IMO, but if she doesn't stop acting and looking like trailer park trash, she's gonna get the boot.

My wife watches it with an almost religeous fervor. I can't stand the non-audition part of the show. The auditions however are a blast to watch, least the people who can't sing but really think they can.
