Default Bye Bye Red... hello, Blu...

Toshiba has halted production of HD DVD players and recorders and is close to making a decision on whether to throw in the towel on the high-definition movie disc format, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported Saturday evening. The decision, which NHK said will likely cost the company several tens of billions of dollars, is being made in the face of flagging support by movie studios and major U.S. retailers.
"We are making considerations following the impact on sales of Warner's announcement but we haven't made any decision," said Keisuke Ohmori, a spokesman for Toshiba, when reached on Saturday evening. He was referring to the January decision by Warner Bros to stop issuing movies on HD DVD and go solely with Blu-ray Disc.

Uh... WalMart was promoting HD DVD like hell with their $14.99 HD DVDs and $99 HD DVDs players...

However, they recently announced that they're discontinuing HD DVD product by June.

Exactly. I refuse to be one of those consumers that is "forced" to pick sides in order for a high definition DVD format to finally be settled on.

Except beta max was the superior format - and lost. This time the superior one is winning.

Fun fact: Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray use the exact same wavelength blue laser. Go figure on the price differences between the players.

agreed, I will not be even thinking of going to either format until I actually have a TV or computer or SOMETHING that can actually display it properly.

Yup - HD-DVD coffin was all but nailed shut anyway, but Walmart's announced was the equivalent of a cremation, killing any hope of a resurrection.
