Default Wire extension question

I am going to extented some of my wires so I can modify my case and hide the wires.

1. I bought a 24 to 24 pin extension. I just realized my psu has 20+4. The motherboard is 24 pin.

Will this 24 to 24 pin extension work without blowing my motherboard or psu or do I need to get a 24 to 20+4 extension?

2. Will just a regular headphone/microphone extension wire work with my hd audio wire coming from the front panel of the case....or do I need to just splice them for it to work? (My case has wires for hd audio or ac 97. I believe my motherboard needs hd audio.)

Thanks.

For the motherboard extention, a 24 to 24 will work just fine. The only difference between a 24 and a 20+4 is that you can move the +4 wires out of the way so you can use it on an older motherboard.

I don't know about the audio, though.

Whoa wait a second...how the hell do you connect the front panel HD audio to your motherboard? I'm pretty sure it's a standard 7-pin connector (with one of the slots that has no pin). Never have I seen a motherboard that uses a 3.5mm connector onto the actual board. If this is what you're talking about, it will definitely not work.

We may need a bit more detail. I know I'm not 100% sure what you're talking about.

P.S. Need a sig? Check out my thread.

On the antec 900 case....they have a headphone/microphone jack, you connect these plugs to the motherboard. My case has both...HD audio and AC97. My motherboard has a 9 pin slot on it. The HD has 9 wires and the AC has 7 wires. I believe my MB manual said I have to use the HD audio connection.

After looking again at the website where I was going to buy my extension ...I think I found the answer. They only sell the extension that has 7 wires in it, I assume it will only work on the AC97 and not on the HD audio wire.

I guess I have to splice, using a cat 5 wire to lengthen it.

If you're talking about using wire you bought from RadioShack or another retailer to extend your existing wires, the critical part is they should be equal to or of a larger ga. wire. Never go smaller. Ideally you should get the exact same ga. or 1 size larger if you plan on lengthening them more than
about 25% than the original wire.

Thanks Dread...I didn't know that.

I was browsing another forum and seen where this guy did an excellet mod job on the antec 900 and was saying how he had to lengthen headphone/mic wires on the case and that you could use either telephone cable (I assume this is different than the regular telephone cords you see all over) or cat 5 wire...which is ethernet cord wires. (I know they have cat 6 and cat 5...but he said cat 5)

I assumed he knew what he was talking about...but I will double check my ethernet wires with the wires I want to extend for the guages of them since you mentioned it. Thanks for the heads up Dread.
