| resident headbanger | [unRaid] Can anyone explain this to me in english. I am thinking about setting up a home server and from what I understand this seems like a good avenue. However I dont know enough about it, hence the reason I am asking. Also anyone here have any suggestions for creating a home server? Thanks, -1 I would rather read a NewEgg review than a [H] review |

| resident headbanger | I would like to backup my HTPC and my home computer. I would also like to be able to stream content to both computers from the server. I am not looking at any raid array I just thought the unraid looked interesting seeing as how if one drive fails it doesnt take all the others with it. -1 I would rather read a NewEgg review than a [H] review |

| Colonel Calamity | ok so this is a sort of a raid setup that copies the info on at least 2 other hard drives... sounds good but based on the documentation, it is a linux server OS, not a RAID base that you could install windows on... but this is very interesting, would be neat to make a server out of it without all the extra junk that can come with other linux distros... or having to pay extra for WHS Quote:

| Functional Alcoholic | I would suggest running Windows Home Server. It allows you to add and subtract hard drives without killing the setup. Windows Home Server: adding hard drives using WHS' RAID-like disk spanning feature | APC Magazine Last edited by Hitman; February 15th, 2008 at 07:12. |

| resident headbanger | I thought there were problems with Windows Home Server. -1 *edit* I read through that and find it looks like what I want to do. However, what happens if one of the drives on that thing fails? do you lose everything, because what it states is that when you add a hard drive it just adds to the storage space. | Colonel Calamity | that unraid looks very cool. If one drive goes down then you can replace it and the system will automatically rebuild the data on that one drive. If one drive gets full and you want to replace it with a larger drive, take out the old, put in the newer larger drive and unraid rebuilds all the data back onto the disk... also it automatically shares the data on your network, so Windows "My Network Places" sees it as disk1, disk2, etc there is a lot of info here: Lime Technology, LLC » Manual ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair!
