Steve Jobs Makes Case for Abolishing DRM

I think the DRM restirctions are way out of hand. I can understand people wanting their copyrights protected, but where do we draw the line on playback and use of protected content like digital audio and video files?

pretty soon buying a CD will mean bringing it home and placing the still-wrapped package on your mantle, because taking off the wrapper is illegal because there are odds you might rip it to your computer so you can use it for your very own personal usage. God help us...

If American's don't start voting with their wallets, and letters/emails to their respective lawmakers, letters to the companies doing this crap, there will come a time where the DRM proponents will get the laws so that your computer is scanned every time you put a CD in the tray. Any songs that you haven't registered, kinda like a Valve/Steam engine, but for music, you'll get fined for having them on your computer at home.

+50 cool points for Jobs :)

DRM Should go Down the tubes!!!11
I believe in open source.
I open-sourced so much stuff last year. (photoshop files I made that took me 10+ hours, flash files I made (week'ers) , all distrubuted freely between my friends and I)

Yeah, I just started learning about open source audio file formats like OGG and FLAC. Every CD I rip from here on out is gonna be in an open source format...

I'm glad Jobs finally let us all know Apple's true stance on DRM. It now seems foolish to believe that the reason behind the DRM was that it tied people to their player, when in actuality that's actually an adverse side effect that Apple does not want.

I've been very pleased with Apple lately. If they ever get around to making the big jump from the one-button mouse, I'm going to buy a Mac (to dual-boot OS X and Linux, the latter of which would be my primary OS).

I use nearly 100% open-source software, and yet I still encode my music in MP3. That's because very few devices support OGG Vorbis. I'd highly prefer OGG, but it'd be a hassle to convert them every time I want to put them on my camera, which will only play MP3.

It's not like DRM makes it difficult to rip music or DVD.

I disagree with you there, Blake. Tools like DVDShrink and DeCSS make ripping DVDs as easy as Britney Spears (oops, did I say that aloud?). Music can be very easily ripped from CDs, and any DRM-encumbered digital music can be fixed with an analog recording by Audacity, which bypasses the speakers, making a perfect copy. Mplayer and Lame also make a great DRM-freeing pair.
