Default Shopping Polygamously

When you piece together a new system, do you buy all your components from a single vendor? Do you tweak your Newegg wish list until you're ready to hit the 'submit order' button? Maybe you've hopped on the ClubIT bandwagon, or perhaps you shop exclusively at any other popular e-tailer (ZipZoomFly, MWave, etc). If so, you're a tech monogamist. And just as in real-life relationships, monogamy isn't a bad thing. There's a definite convenience and organizational benefit that comes from having a single invoice, and there may even be unexpected perks from sticking with a single vendor, such as 'thank you' gifts or personalized customer service. But I'm here to tempt you to cheat.

That's right - I'm advocating online polygamy. Or at the very least, I'm urging you to consider it. You already know the benefits of remaining faithful, but if, like many, it's the bottom dollar that matters most, you need to expand your online shopping portfolio. Here's how you do it:

Nice article ... I rarely get it all at one location ... and only bunch orders up if the deal with shipping cost is the best way to go.

Free shipping is my friend on the best deals.

I like newegg's shipping. I got my entire system shipped from newegg for the same shipping price that TigerDirect was going to have me pay to ship just the case. Haven't bought from any of the others, though.

I tend to compare between newegg and zipzoomfly... if I can get it all free shipping at zipzoomfly and it is cheaper that way than with shipping through newegg, then I order... otherwise newegg is untouchable

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Shipping is a funny thing, as it doesn't really exist. It's all about the bottom line price. Case in point, here's two vendors selling a Crucial Ballistix 2GB kit:
ClubIT: $29.99 + $5.00 shipping = $34.99 shipped (after rebate)
Newegg: $34.99 + FREE shipping = $34.99 shipped (after rebate)
On paper, Newegg's 'Free Shipping' looks attractive, but it's all a numbers game. ClubIT charges $5 to ship the same kit, yet the bottom line price is no different for either vendor. The non-rebated price throws a wrench into this particular example, but the underlying concept remains.

Let the vendors get silly with shipping; it's up the buyer to apply sensible math. Preaching to the choir here (in this thread), but you'd be amazed at how often I've seen posts touting free shipping despite the actual cost.
