ok first of all thx for looking :D im trying to build a gaming rig. i got a couple of **** questions first tho :D 1) after you just overclock the cpu (e6700 for example), do you inevitably overclock other components? like vid card and memory? 2) in canadacumputers (CC) it says it gives 1 year warranty, say i use a card like a bfg 8800 gts for 1.5 years and it burns or w/e, i know i couldnt go to CC cause the warranty expired, but could i send it to BFG from canada and get a replacement? a few goals id like to achieve with this pc :D 1) id like to get 100 fps constantly no matter what (even when there are like 40 ppl in the server with u) in games like hl2, cs:s and well 1.6 shouldnt be a prob. 2) overclock my E6700 cpu to 3.2 and get temps around 30 C, no higher :D now onto the components cpu : im gonna be buying this prolly in a few months so if the price of E6700's drops then ill buy it otherwise right now the Q6600 is like the same price (as e6700) so if it remains like that there would be no point in buying e6700. but for now ill stick with e6700 since i dont really need the best of the best :D motherboard : gigabyte ga-965p-ds3 power supply : corsair 620w (this is oc friendly? :D) case : antec 900 hard drive : seagate 320 gb sata ram : well id go for G.skill but CC doesnt have it so unless i can get it with special order or something ill go for corsair (i know ull prolly recommend something like these Canada Computers - Memory > DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz + : Crucial Ballistix (BL2KIT12864AA804) DDR2 800Mhz PC2 6400 2GB Kit (1GB x 2) 240-pin . but are they really better than corsair?) vid card : BFG 8800 gts 320 mb OC2, or eVGA 8800 gts 320? which is better ? :D cpu cooler : scythe katana Canada Computers - Cooling > CPU Cooling : Scythe KATANA 2 - 3 Heat Pipes CPU Cooler for AMD Socket AM2/940/939/754 & Intel Socket 775/478 (SCKTN-2000). ^ is that much better than the stock cooler of e6700? like is it worth buying? well thats about it i guess. suggestions & comments r very welcome :D if u need links to each thing just post. these forums are awsome!

I like most of Tyreal's suggestions. BFG also has a great warranty, and their OC2 version of the 8800GTS is kickass. XFX has an awesome warranty too, and those three (two stated along with eVGA) are pretty much the only ones we recommend here at HL. As for the cooler - Cooler Master GeminII is the way to go my man. Slap two Arctic 12 fans on there, only 20dBA each and efficient at 37CFM, perfect cooling setup. As mentioned, case is up to you. About the CPUs: E6700 is an amazing waste of money. Go for the E6550 or E6850 if not the Q6600 (or even the XEON equivalent mentioned in another thread). E6850 is already clocked at 3.0GHz, and the E6550 is clocked at 2.33GHz. Also, the things you want to achieve - kind of over the top. That's nearly impossible (or at least will be soon) even with an 8800GTX. Games are fully playable at 40-50 FPS...why 100? And why ALL THE TIME? That's unrealistic. Also, temps ALWAYS below 30*C? C'mon now...load temps will always travel higher than that DEFINITELY. Your goal should be under 50 under load - THAT'S a good spec, and realistic. Under 30 CONSTANTLY is even touchy for water cooling... Last edited by Dr. V; July 26th, 2007 at 17:17.

The GeminII may be a monster cooler but it's not as good for other reasons. It takes up WAY too much room. For most motherboards, area under the heatsink including the ram slots are OFF LIMITS when it is installed. Other heatsinks take up much less room and cool around the same if not better. ![]() D-Tek Fuzion, MCP655, MCR220 Last edited by Tyreal; July 26th, 2007 at 17:24.

If you never want to go above 30C on the CPU, might I suggest water cooling? Also, check out the E6750. Same stock clock, cheaper, higher FSB. E8400 DFI Blood Iron P35-T2RL 4GB G.Skill 800MHz Sapphire Radeon HD3870 512MB Silverstone DA650W WD 250GB + Seagate 320GB

Unfortunately, you will probably never get lower than 30c with water cooling. ![]() D-Tek Fuzion, MCP655, MCR220

Also, EVGA is a great choice, but I own BFG cards personally and it's never a problem. All I can say about GeminII is that IT'S AMAZING FOR AN AIR COOLER. Yes a bit heavy, yes a bit big, but it cools the entire top of you motherboard as well as you CPU and RAM. The Antec 900 is great, but I have never had one or seem one in person, so I can't say much about it. I would say that it you get the GeminII, go with a full-sized tower case. I have one in a mid-tower, and while it's doable, it's a tad cramped. E8400 DFI Blood Iron P35-T2RL 4GB G.Skill 800MHz Sapphire Radeon HD3870 512MB Silverstone DA650W WD 250GB + Seagate 320GB

| HL's Technomancer | When you raise the FSB to overclock, your also overclocking your memory. RAM and CPU go hand in hand in overclocking, which is why it's important to have some good sticks. The Ballistix are damn good and will suit you fine. And yes, more often then not they are "better" then Corsair because you can be sure your getting Micron chips (Crucial is Microns own brand) The Corsair 620 has around 50 amps on the +12v if I remember right, you should be all set with that. For the price of that processor, I'd go with the Q6600 with the G0 stepping since your building this rig with overclocking in mind. For the motherboard, take the suggestions of the other guys, I'm an AMD guy. Those games with a 8800 should net you around 100 FPS when compared to the rest of your setup, but like always sometimes it can drop just dont be too picky. 30 degrees celsius under load? AND overclocked? Your asking too much man, try for a more reasonable temperature like 50 as ST!X said. Or use a Peltier. Evga and BFG are both equally awesome brands, just pick whichever has the clockspeeds you want for the price you want to pay. The cases and coolers are always up to debate, I personally just pick the one thats more in my price range. Although for cool temps and lots of working room you cant go wrong with the TT Armor. |
