it never occured to me to try and hook my psu up to my mobo.
so i tried.
and all the ATX cables are back to front.

all connectors only have one way they work in a given plug. If it doesn't work one way then flip it over and try it the other way. If it is the 4 pin, just match the latch piece to the lock tab on the power plug itself.
Sometimes OEM power supplies have a different pinout so they change a few of the connectors so you don't connect the wrong power supply, this is common with Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo/IBM, HP and Compaq.

which power connector are you trying to connect? the 20/24 pin main power? the 4pin molex to hard drive/CD drive? the 4pin square mobo connector?
it all depends on which connector it is.

well. ive tried the 20/24. that wont fit.
its not the 4 pin molex so i think its the 4 pin mobo connector. its the only cable that sems to have the squares and rounded edges facing the write way so that they fit in.

as long as the clip side lines up over the notch on the motherboard then it should work fine... sometimes just slight pressure to push it into place... if all the pins are mismatched then you may have gotten a bad PSU or one with a Dell/OEM connector.

hmmm i dunno.
i looked in the manual at the pins and they are exactly the same layout as on the connector. its just they are oposite when i try and connect it to the mobo
could it be the mobo?

not likely unless you pulled the mobo out of a Dell... look at the labels and stuff on the PSU, is there any mention of OEM or Dell or Compaq or anything like that??
