Default nvidia + VIA = Vista compatible PC for cheap

DailyTech - NVIDIA Promises Powerful, Sub-$45 Processing Platform to Counter Intel

Quote:
During NVIDIA's financial analyst meeting today, the company revealed plans for what it calls "The World's Most Affordable Vista Premium PC". The platform use a VIA Isaiah processor coupled with an integrated NVIDIA chipset. NVIDIA reckons that the Isaiah + NVIDIA IGP combination is good for a total of 36 GFLOPS in comparison to a mere 6.4 GFLOPS for a comparable Celeron-based system with an Intel 945 IGP/ICH4 chipset.
I still suggest linux or XP for lower end machines....

That's actually pretty cool. The major downfall of those ITX type boards is usually the video processing, so this will be a major boost, especially with the beefed up "Isaiah" processor from VIA. This platform will probably cost a pretty penny, but will probably have pretty impressive performance for its size and power consumption. I'm excited (although I probably wouldn't run Vista on it)!

and on the heels of this announcement is one from AMD about their IGP solution, touting DX10 level of gaming available from integrated graphics.

Got this in my email today:

AnandTech: AMD 780G: Preview of the Best Current IGP Solution
ATI Hybrid Graphics
Quote:
The AMD 780G Chipset is the first AMD chipset to integrate a powerful Microsoft DirectX®10 graphics core powered by ATI Radeon™ Graphics. The first AMD chipset that enables you to play the latest games with no extra graphics card. The first AMD chipset that delivers a full HD cinematic experience for both Blu-Ray or HD-DVD movies.

Riiiiight, I'll believe it when I see it. Sure it may be the first DX10 compatible chipset IGP, but I doubt you can play any DX10 game on it (notice that they didn't have any DX10 games showcased in the video). I'm all for everything they say they're putting into it, but they shouldn't be marketing it like its some gaming breakthrough.

Plus, they have the fan spinning backwards on the CPU heatsink....

One of the main points is that it is based on the 38XX GPU core... and it should use 128-512MB of system memory so it is very possible that you can have an IGP with DX10 power... will be hard to say until we actually start seeing results.
