First I would like to welcome you to our fine forum. This is the BEST place to get your questions answered. Now that, that, is out of the way. What motherboard and processor are you looking at? You will definately need a video card. What kind of PSU is it?

Not exactly sure which ones yet...because I'm not sure what to look at in my price range of around 500

i was takin a look at the D processor...805 is it? the one with all the buzz about OCing to 3.7 and its just fine
pentium 4's would do me well still i suppose too maybe even a radeon 9800 pro lol
but if i can go higher than that id like too

the old family computer that im trying to get away from has 2 broken fans, amd1700+ nForce2mobo and 512sd ram, and a radeon 9200

Welcome to the forums! We'll try to help the best we can.

Here's my suggested build for your budget. However, if you need an operating system disk, the total comes to $600. The prices I've listed reflect shipping charges, if any. The one item with a MIR (Mail In Rebate) is the Video card. The Ram I picked out meets the Intel 965 Chipset requirement of 5-5-5 timings and 1.8V. Some of this came from our budget recommendations page.

Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3 $111

CPU - Pentium D 915 Presler 2.8GHz $88

Ram - A-DATA 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2-800 $72

HDD - Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB - $68

Video - EVGA 7600GT 256MB - $126 (Has a $20 MIR)

Optical - LiteOn DVD/CD Burner - $34

OS - Windows XP Home - $95

Q6600@ 3.2GHz w/ CNPS9700 | EVGA 780i | 2Gb Corsair DDR2-800 | EVGA 9800GTX 512 Video | 1x WD 640Gb HDD, 2x Seagate 400Gb HDD, 1x250Gb WD | 2x Samsung SH-203B Opticals | Antec 900 | ABS/Tagan BZ700 700W PSU

There's an S3 and a DS3. If the DS3 is affordable for him, I would recommend it over the S3.

Hmm... Sounds like an Antec 900... That is a wonderful case. I don't really have the time right now, but I will try and come up with something for ya this weekend. I have some really good ideas for it.

*EDIT* -For $500 you can do way better than the list above. Gigabyte has really cheap boards. I would grab a ASUS mATX or something of the sort. Also A-Data RAM is a no no. Mushkin or G Skill will give you more bang for the buck. 1 GB of Corsair is a possibility with this build.
