Default My 64 bit system is good but not great...

So I built my 64 bit system

Intel Quad Core Q6600
Zalman CNPS9500 cooling fan
4gb G.Skill DDR2-800 ram
Asus P5N-E motherboard
HIS Radeon HD 2600 PRO 512mb ram

I installed Vista Ultimate which defaulted to 64 bit which I am happy about.

However, this sytem PAUSES frequently and it is just unacceptable to me! When running a few programs and playing streaming music, it sputters about every 3 minutes... When doing my own thing, particularly in using complicated websites, the system will just lock up and I have to wait 1-2 minutes for the system to recover and give me back control of they keyboard. Aside from that there are times when I am typing and the system pauses and the keystrokes are completely lost.

I paid for freakin' quad core and this happens regardless of the number of applications and regardless of the complexity of those applications. It is unacceptable!

Also, my Performance Index is 4.6 marked by my memory as being the slowest item in my machine. Did I buy memory that was too slow? I want to overclock the chip, but I haven't done it yet because it doesn't seem to make sense to try!

Thanks in advance.

Rob

Part of the problem I feel is this:

Hi, I recently built a new system and want to attach a 30" monitor to it. I have a Radeon HD2600PRO video card with 512mb.

I have an SLI capable motherboard, an Asus P5N-E.

That is a post that you just made also. I just have not seen much luck running the ATI cards in the Nvidia SLI motherboards. You would of probably had better performance with a Crossfire board, or using an Nvidia video card in the current mobo!

Also something to check on is that your Asus motherboard is up to the latest BIOS, as Asus is known for performance issues in some of the earlier BIOS releases on a lot of there motherboards.

Actually, this problem happens to me all the time running Home Premium x86. About once a day, usually while playing music or loading a website, it locks up for a minute or so before returning control. I've come to suspect it was either Skynet taking control or the fact I'm using the factory BIOS from like 2006 (I'm lazy, haven't gotten around to it), but seeing another with the same problem makes me rethink this.

Have you installed the newest drivers? You might want to make sure you have the mosr recent chipset drivers.

You may also want to check out the BIOS, and make sure everything is set correctly.

As to the memory, 4GB of memory is awesome, regardless of the speed. Working with apps like Photoshop, it makes a world of difference. Also, that Windows index is worthless.....don't pay any attention into it.

If need be, download a few benchmarks and lets check out the scores to diagnose what the issue is.

I have no idea where to get a benchmark program for my system, can someone point me in the right direction?

Cool Re: My 64 bit system is good but not great...

What is user friendly and actually works? I installed 1 program and it doesn't run, cinebench does what I have no idea... something simple and straightforward?

Try this Futuremark - Download - PCMark05. Also, what power supply are you using? Bailey
