Be aware that not all fans are made like this though and you could potentially break the bearing seal by trying to disassemble it.

Yep, been doing that for about 10 years! It works pretty dang good

make it quieter? stop using 80mm fans and switch to 120mm

This works great for ball bearing fans. It is sometimes tricky on sleeve bearing fans though. On one sleeve bearing fan, I had to take out the little retention ring on the back, and actually push the drive shaft out of the bearing shell, clean it up good, and then coat it with some light weight motor oil. I got it back together and put the retention ring back in, and worked fine since. Awful lot of work for a $3 fan, but I'm cheap.
