Default Crime Boards Come Crashing Down

Quote:
It was mid-March 2004, and David Thomas was chatting online with a young hacker who went by the nickname "Ethics," when the latter suddenly asked him: "btw, you know anyone who would pay to get celebs private cell phone numbers? or any other number's from t-mobile's database?"
Thomas replied, "hehehehehe oh man that would be so fuking cool."
Ethics, aka Nicolas Jacobsen, did little on the boards but talk, Thomas says. He once discussed building a miniature submarine with carder middleman "Myth" to run cocaine from Colombia. But mostly he procrastinated and disappeared when it came time to do any jobs. So when Ethics told Thomas he'd hacked a T-Mobile server and had access to billing information and passwords for the company's 14 million customers, Thomas was skeptical. That is, until Jacobsen sent him Paris Hilton's Social Security number and password, as well as the security question and answer to her T-Mobile account and photos from her camera phone.

This kinda crap scares me. Last year I had my debit card # stolen(also tied in with my savings acct) and it took about 2 months to get it all sorted. Every day I was wishing for 5 minutes alone with that douchebag. Anybody a Pantera fan? I got that song stuck in my head now.....srry for the tangent.

OMG, I couldn't even imagine being a victim of identity theft.

I don't think our government takes this near serious enough, and I think the penalties for doing it should be far worse than what they are, considering how much damage you can do to someones life.

Agreed! There's a couple my wife and I have been friends with for the last 5 years. 4 years ago the wife had her identity stolen, she's the main money maker, and they are still trying to get their finances fixed. They ended up in bankruptcy over it. Have managed to hold onto their house only because a Judge finally realized what was going on and prevented it from happening.

At least the Judge wasn't a (jerk) about it.

Well, four years ago, the identity theft stuff was just getting to be common. When it first came up for them, they had one hell of a time in court trying to convince a Judge it wasn't them making all the purchases and taking out new credit cards. The thing is, even if these people are caught, they usually have no money at all, just the thefts they've bought things on through credit. So the victims, like our friends, end up spending tens of thousands of dollars to get everything set back to rights with the creditors and banks, only to have this on their file and viewable by anyone for the next ten years. Consequently, they get dramatically higher interest rate quotes for anything they want to do and they have no way of recouping any of their financial expenditures for lawyers and courts. The thieves pay with time in jail and that's it. The victim is left holding the empty bag.

This is why I shred every single piece of mail I get for credit cards and other crap like that. I don't just toss it in the trash. Also, I do a bi-annual credit checkup on both my wife and I. It costs around $125 each time I do it, but at least I can remain aware of what's going on with our credit history.
