| Colonel Calamity | Anytime there is a major change such as motherboard or hard drive, the safest and best route is to always backup all your files to another drive, then format and reinstall windows in the new system. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Crash your computer? Think we might be using the wrong word here. Possibly meant to say 'format' your computer? If so, not necessarily. I've successfully upgraded motherboards and processors in a system before while keeping the HDD and it's contents (including OS) intact. You'll need to uninstall all of the chipset, and on board equipment drivers prior to starting the upgrade. HIGHLY recommend backing up any important files you may have on the off-chance it doesn't go as smoothly as one would wish. | socket 939 junkie | a clean install of windows is what i recommend for a new build. as long as you have all your files and stuff on another hard drive, you should be fine. |

| Colonel Calamity | Dread and some people have good luck doing what he mentioned but for the rest of us, to be safe and least number of problems, reinstalling windows is the best... ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |

| Colonel Calamity | most of the time you can have the board, cpu, memory and drive installed when you install windows, then once it is up and running with all updates, you can start installing the sound card and extra items ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Just so you understand what backup means. You cannot backup software that is currently installed. You must reinstall the software on the new operating system you install on the new hard drive for it to work properly with the new configuration of hardware. But this does not mean you cannot backup the files you saved from them, such as word documents, pictures, and other personal files. ![]() |

| Well everything came in yesterday see sig for new config. but when I put everything in all I had to do was reactivate windows and everything works fine didn't have to format the drive or reinstall windows only thing I have to do now is get all the drivers installed and uninstall the ones I don't use it's about time i got on the dual core ban wagon and I'm telling you what I love it i have an hp with a x2 4000+ in it I use for general computing and this one blows it out of the water. on windows xp using the google side bar memory usage is only 25% CPU is hardly ever shown Core Temps States that the temps are 20 C on core 0 and 17 C on core 1. the case temp is always a constant 40 C First Build CPU: AMD 64 x2 5000+ Board: Asus M2A-VM Memory: 2 GB G.
