Default Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD: FIGHT!

Click the image to open in full size.

Waiting to see which high definition format has the legs to remain standing has become like watching two tired boxers dance around the ring in the later rounds. Spectator interest is still there, but the heavy weight action is not, and every time one finally swings a punch, we sit on the edge of our seat happy just to see some action. Let's have a look at the latest jabs from each and see which one's hitting harder...

Personally I feel HD-DVD is better for the consumer, however, I feel Blu-ray will win the fight. There is more money to be made with Blu-ray and Blu-ray seems to be pushing their marketing alot harder.

nice artical. I think 'moving' memory like CD's and hard disks will meet an end to solid state memory. with technology progressing so quickly, is there room for moving parts, or will they eventually just fade away?

I would like to mention Paul... Blu-Ray players have dropped to $400, even the ones made by Sony. Not bad now.

AAAHHHH
Frickin' HD-DVD and Blu-Ray; they both suck!
This whole format war thing is really out of control. Not only do High Definition players and TV's cost a ridiculous amount to own, there are so many competing formats that it essentially makes each side completely proprietary (like Apple). The movie industry, let alone the movie stores) cannot afford to produce two copies of every movie (one in HD-DVD and one in Blu-Ray) just to try and cover all the bases and make the content available to everyone. Something's got to give, but I fear (like you Paul) that it won't be anytime soon.

At least the DVD-R and DVD+R format war produced compatable players of both formats relatively quickly. I will not buy any high-definition player until the market is showing a clear victor. This is almost as bad as buying an Intel motherboard hoping the chipset will be compatible with the next generation processor!

Simply out of curiosity (I'm actually indifferent at which one eventually wins), would you mind elaborating? HD-DVD players currently have a pricing advantage, but Blu-ray's capacity is two-thirds more than HD-DVD. If pricing leveled out (and at some point, they would have to), would you still feel that HD-DVD benefits the consumer more?

Looking online at both Best Buy and Circuit city, the cheapest HD-DVD player is roughly $200 less expensive than the cheapest Blu-ray player. You can find better deals on either tech outside of the big chains, but still yet, you'll save a good chunk on an HD-DVD player (I think Captain Crunch linked me to one a few months back that was under $200!).

Toshiba HD-DVD player @ Best Buy - $299
Sony Blu-ray player @ Best Buy - $488

Toshiba HD-DVD player @ Circuit City - $299
Sony Blu-ray player @ Circuit City - $499

I swear I saw a Blu-Ray player at work (Circuit City) last week for $400... damn.

Well, at that price point, it's worth it to buy a PS3. Blu-Ray and a console for the same price.

What I meant to say is that HD-DVD Movies are better and what better means is that it is cheaper. Ive seen a HD-DVD and a Blu-Ray movie and I cannot tell the difference visually, even on the 1080P, and the average consumer with a HD-TV has up to 1080i/720p. So if I cant tell the difference, I, as a consumer, would rather spend less money. I really dont care who wins, they just need to hurry up and be done with it. :fight:

Ill wait to see which one becomes more dominant so I can decide to buy an XBox or a PS3 since they cost just as much as a normal player. Would I ever get one for my computer? As of now, no, as I do not see Blu-Ray or HD-DVD becoming much of a personal storage media for software and files with storage technology advancing like it is so Blu-Ray having more storage space is not anything special. I also do not see software companies coming out with games on HD-DVD or Blu-ray for computers just yet. I know Windows has a HD-DVD version of Vista Im curious how many versions of that has sold.

$1000 for a blue-ray burner? $60 for 50GB Disk which I can't quickly stick in my pocket without the fear of scratches and cracks? no thanks. It will be a while before we see free after rebate blu-ray burners and media on black friday. By then, Ill probably see the HVD, and 100Gig pen drives.
