Think? What's that?

what was the biggest tech story?

Probably all the DirectX 10 coverage. Tech demos being the best. Not sure, can't really think of anything on this subject.

What was the best new product?

I'd have to go with Core 2 Duo

what was the most overhyped product?

HardwareLogic... wait, that wasn't a product. Hmm, I'd say the PhysX cards, those were pretty hyped and ended up being a flop with a performance impact and nothing to really support it. Maybe it will be better next year when more games and such support it.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.80GHz
Cooler Master GeminII - Thanks Rich and HL!
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 1.3)

OCZ GameXStream 600W PSU
Maxtor 300GB 7200RPM SATA150 16MB cache HDD
Seagate 500GB 7200ROM SATA300 16mb cache HDD

Biggest tech story, Sony laptop battery recall

Best new product, Dual core processors

Over hyped product, Vista

What are your thoughts on 2006?

Heckuva year! We've seen dual-core really explode into the mainstream, AMD finally adopting DDR2 and saying goodbye to the much loved s939, Intel letting go of the long stage pipelines and regaining both the crown and momentum with Core 2 Duo, MaxPC got a killer contributing writer and HardwareLogic snagged my favorite Hardware Editor to date, Monarch vanishes as if it never existed, desktop PSUs broke the 1KW mark, and so much more. This has been one of the busier years in the tech industry in recent memory.

What was the biggest tech story?

A tossup between the AMD/ATI merger and Dell selling AMD configured PCs.

What was the best new product?

Core 2 Duo would have to rank right up there when considering the implication and not just performance alone.

what was the most overhyped product?

The PhysX was probably the most overhyped, with the Killer NIC coming in a close second, losing the dishonor only because it didn't (and doesn't continue to) receive the same attention. And I don't know if we can call this a product, but Capper's, Jeff's, and Joker's CSS skills were definitely all flops in '06.

I agree with Pauls flops, I would also like to throw Cross-Fire in there. I was hoping it would give SLI a run for it's money but that just didn't happen.

It will probably pick up steam as more Radeon cards support the internal CrossFire connection rather than the external dongle and the requirement of a CF "master" card.
