Default Mozilla Trial

I installed both Firefox and Thunderbird about two and a half weeks ago; I removed them this morning. I may try them again someday, but for now I'm back to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Thought I'd share a few impressions I have of these Mozilla products.

Likes: Security; endless add-ons and great themes; "real-time" spell checking in both email client and browser; easily personalized configurations; great support magazine and forum.

Dislikes: S-L-O-W Opens very slowly, and is noticeably slower opening web pages and downloading files as well as email. (Honestly, my Athlon FX system seemed like I was using my old Celeron 'puter.) Thunderbird doesn't support my antivirus program's spam filters. I realize T-bird has its own, but I really like the one in BitDefender, and it's all "trained".

Although I would prefer to use the Mozilla products, I just can't put up with the poor speed.

Please, I do not want to start a flame war, but would like to get some input, suggestions and comments.

I had the same speed problem at first with FF. I had to dump IE to get it to work right. Now everything is hunky dory. JM.02

What versions were you using? Firefox consistently maxes my Internet bandwith when downloading files, also opens up pretty fast, even on a reboot. Between opening web pages, I see no difference at all. Then again, I installed FireFox the minute Windows was installed..

Firefox is a little slower to load up the first time sometimes compared to IE, but I never thought it was anything signifigant. The extra features and add-ons for Firefox make it more than worth while. I can't stand using anything but Firefox anymore, I feel like I actually have control over the internet now (not the other way around). Never really used Firefox or Outlook much, so I can't comment on it there. I do use Outlook at work and it opens painfully slow, so it might differ from setup to setup...

In the time that I have used FF and TB, I have never had a speed issue. This is both FF 1.5 and 2.0. The only thing I can think of is that if you have plenty on the hard drive, it may be writing in the middle of fragmented files. Run CCleaner to clean the temp files and run the Registry issue cleaner. Once this is done, install FF and TB only from the official website, then run a very good Defrag program like mentioned in this thread:

DEFRAG THREAD

Also some good spyware cleaners may help as spyware may be interfering, programs liek SuperANTISpyware, AdAware, a-squared, and Spyware Blaster

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I can't stand IE... it's a pain in the ass... Especially at school where they still use IE6. At least move to IE7.

I still use FF where ever I go. I've got it on my flash drive too... :). The only noticeable difference I see is that text just looks sharper in IE.

I was an Opera fan until the latest update for FF came out. Now everything runs so smooth in FF that I haven't opened Opera or IE7 since. FireFox was opening in about a full 8 seconds after I defragged using diskeeper (great defragger btw, FF was taking a good 15 sec to open before that) but after the update installed FF just pops up immediately. Everything seems to display better as well when browsing, like everyone says, web pages are designed in for IE so when another browser displays them they look a little odd sometimes. Now it seems to have gotten better. That may be due to web sites coding a little different though, I wasn't using FF to browse for quite a while.

I've still got FF on my laptop. Guess I'll keep it there and see if time will help me get used to it. Just wish I could get it to open faster.
