Default Move Over Firefox, New Browser in Town!

The Miss America Kid-Safe Web Browser is to debut on Thursday. The free download includes blocking mechanisms that have existed for years. But it also features an animated Nelson who walks kids through their online experience, advising them about Internet safety and spouting random trivia: "There are twice as many kangaroos as people in Australia!"

The browser permits access to 10,318 Web sites, all of which were prescreened and determined to be kid-friendly by the Miss America Organization and the Children's Educational Network, which developed the software for it. It has a feature enabling parents to lock the computer and prohibit Internet access with any other browser, and it lets parents add sites to the approved list.

I'm all for it. Children need to be censored. With that, I'll offer this caveat. It will be good for those with kids under the age of 12. The software needs to be tweaked based on age. My son can go to websites at 13 that I wouldn't have allowed him to at 11.

And it can be. You can set up different accounts for different kids, adjust the security level (I haven't looked into what the differences are), and you can manually add sites to the approved list. You can also disable other installed browsers from working, so you don't have to sit over the child's shoulder and make sure they're trying to circumvent. Of course, if you suspect you child would try that, you should probably stay in close proximity anyway.

If my kids were younger, and I didn't trust them, this would be a good
option for a parent to have. I'm of the thought that teaching your kids what is right
amd what is wrong on the internet is the best prevention. If they're too young
to understand right/wrong, they are probably too young to be surfing
unsupervised anyway.

My kids are 11 and 15, I trust them both to make good decisions while
on the internet, and they haven't let me down yet. And yes, I do check
their histories every once in a while as a precaution and limit their online
time.

HAHA, that's crazy! Why Miss America?! Wouldn't kids be more likely to listen to Sponge Bob Square Pants or Kermit the Frog than Miss America? At least those characters are timeless, there is a different Miss America all the time.

Sounds like an appropriate browser for WhiteEagle.
