Default More assistance please

yes, its' me and I'm back (again) with another question. (SIGH). Seems like no matter how much I think I know about pcs it's always just a little bit shy of how much i need. :embarassed::bangh ead:

anyhow, trying to do a simple drive sharing. External HD on my pc via USB. Has all our pictures. Want to do file sharing so when SHE wants a picture I don't have to stop what I'm doing and let her look on my pc. Mine is Vista 64bit, hers is Windows Media Center.

I think i did everything right on my end - found drive and said "share". Went to Network and sharing center and turned file sharing and network discovery "ON".

went to her pc to map network drive - nothing.
Reboot and try again - nothing.

:dontknow:

If anybody has the idiot's guide to sharing an external hard drive between a vista and a WMC pc please let me know. I feel like such a putz.

Dang PTRMAN, there is a network protocol that you have to download for windows XP to see any Vista shared network, but damned if I can put my finger on it at the moment

I do know that you can find it on Microsoft site, but I would google Vista XP network sharing or something along them lines.

Make sure each machine shares on the same Workgroup. By default XP Media Center (and XP in general) uses MSHOME while a Vista machine uses a different workgroup name.

Right click My Computer and choose Properties and clici the Computer Name tab in XP. Note the Workgroup name, now check the workgroup name of the Vista box. If they are not the same make them the same.

Most of the time it is easier to share a folder on the drive rather than the whole drive. So remove the drive sharing, set the main picture folder to be shared....
also be sure to set them to the same workground (but not domain)
Download and install the LLTD on the non-vista computer(s) LINK
then once this is all done you should be able to go to the wifes computer, go to My Network places and if the shared folder does not show right away, you may need to go to the left and show network computers

You would think that as long as computers have been around that file and drive sharing would be a lot easier.

Thanks for all your help so far, but I'm not quite there.

Installed LLTD on XP computer. restarted. nothing.
Went to to my network places - nothing.
Clicked on View workgroup computers - got a message that Our Home (workgroup name) is not accessible. I do not have permission to use this network resource.

Now what?

Running any firewalls? If yes, try turning the firewall off and give it a shot. Also are the other machines running password protected accounts?

on the Xp computers, you may need to stop all file and folder shares (and printers)... and then redo them, make them shared again after restarting the computer. Set them up first without a password, and then make them use a password afterwards to see which way works.
