Default Linux open source for your router?

Man, this sucks. My router isn't supported. Otherwise, I'd give it a shot.

I wrote an article for MPC's June issue on the Tomato firmware. Pretty damn nifty, if you own a compatible router.

My only concern is if it F's up is it easy to go back to the Linksys firmware?

Yup, flashing back to the Linksys firmware is a piece of cake (I tested that).

Well I tried it, and my wireless didn't work. I am sure if I played around with it, I could probably get it to work. IMO if it doesn't work on install, it's not worth my time.

I put the Linksys firmware back on and everything is back to normal.

What router model and version # do you own? Compatible routers include:

- Linksys WRT54G (up to version 4)
- Linksys WRT54GS (up to version 4)
- Linksys WRT54GL (versions 1 and 1.1, which is all of them)
- Buffalo WHR-G54S
- Buffalo WHR-HP-G54

As an FYI to others, any Linksys WRT54G/GS models purchased today will be well beyond version 4, and and thus incompatible. For the article, I hit up every PC component store in town (Best Buy, Circuit City, DigiLink, OfficeMax, World of CD-ROM, and a few others I'm neglecting to remember), and not a single one stocked the older versions. I ended up using a WRT54GL, which were designed specifically for folks wanting to use third party firmware (the 'L' stands for Linux). The problem with newer models is that they don't have enough onboard memory to support most third party firmware, including Tomato.

I've been very curious about this myself since I saw it in the magazine. I wish my router was supported, but, alas, mine was a $15 deal from Best Buy

I have the Linksys WRT54GS Version 1.0 I bought it when they first came out. I think it was the settings, I just didn't feel like fooling with it.
