Default Linksys WRT300N

Ok so my father just picked up this Linksys WRT300N router. Been trying to set it up, but its just giving me one headache after another. 1st my dad wants WEP, since its the easiest/common security and we had it on our old Dlink DI-524. So i try doing the security thing, the passphrase doesn't work for linksys, you have to use their generated code. Fine watever i tried that, and then i get no internet, only local connectivity. I disable the security, boom everything works again. Tried WPA and still same issue. Am i doing something wrong? I wouldn't run a wifi without any security even if it is Wireless N. Tried googling and what not, can't seem to find a solution so i turn to you guys =)

are you directly plugged into the router or using wireless?

my laptop couldn't find my wireless n router until i went into the router settings and set it to wireless g to match the wireless capability of the laptop.

the desktop is in the router menu while i try to get it to work on the wireless.

*Edit*
reset everything, and now works with 64 bit WEP encryption, 128 still doesn't work -___-;;

I have a wrt150n, but I live in the sticks, so I don't have to worry about someone borrowing my internet. I believe the linksys has a thing where you enter in some text, and it convert it to hex? On the laptop, you have to set it to passphrase password, and type in the same text you put in the router.

EDIT: For some reason, windows seemed to have issues WEP 128 or higher. At my dad's house we got wireless for al lthe computers, since he lives near a bunc hof other houses, I opted for WEP128 or WPA (can't remember), but windows itself wouldn't support it, so I had to install belkins wireless program to connect

Just an FYI, WEP is the one of the most unsecure form of "security" for Wi-Fi, second only to MAC address filtering.

Yes I know, but my dad's other hardware requires WEP only (something with his work notebook only supporting WEP)

sometimes windows likes to remember the old WEP keys, even if you are entering it into another program (and vice versa)....

Hmm now i seem to have the issue i had b4 with another router, im gettin inconsistant mbps through my wifi PCI, a trendnet G card. Its dropping all the way down to 1 MBPS which is impossible to game on. What can cause fluctuating MBPS? I honestly think its prob this crappy PCI -_-...my notebook stays at 54 mbps (even though its suppose to be N). Web browsing and what not is fast though lol (downloads, bittorrent)

anything such as a cordless phone to a cell phone can cause a drop with certain cards. Try changing the channel up or down 2 numbers and see if that helps.

I have the WRT150N and wish I never bought it. For land lines hey it's great. For WiFi is sucks. There could have been interference from the two cordless phones I don't know. But when WEP is enabled, range went down the drain.
