Default IE FTP

I remember when I used to be able to use IE for simple FTP stuff. It would let me send and recieve files as if I were copying and pasting them from different folders on my own PC. Then after one update during IE6, that capability seemed to stop. I assume it was some major security update or something. The free FTP programs that I have been using are not near as 'user-friendly' and all the suggestions I found on microsoft.com did seem to work for me.

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to get that capability back or if there is a really good free FTP program I can use?

SmartFTP 2.0.
But, IE has still FTP features as far as I know. *shrugs*
If you connect to a FTP that needs authorization a box will popup and ask your for the username and password.

Yeah but that justs lists folders and files in a text format. I can DL those files but I can no longer send files using FTP via IE, nor can I view the folders as if they are just windows folders. Sometime during one of the version 6 updates, that function was lost or changed and I can't figure out how to get it back.

Then it's something new that I didn't know about, because last time I used IE for FTP you could copy-paste like if it was your own computer, if you had the proper rights (taking into consideration your upload speed obviously).

I kind of see what you mean though about the list view, but if I remember correctly it's not something on the client side but on the server side. Unless what you're viewing is a HTTP server without an index and whatnot but with folder listing enabled...

Personally i'd suggest SmartFTP. It's been a while I tested this extension for Firefox but the last time I did it was very slow (not to upload but to manage) so it was rather painful to use overall. Give it a whirl though, you might like it. The functions were similar to most FTP clients while still having an easy interface.

I use an app called FlashFXP. It's got a 30 day trial however, so it's not completely free.

I have firefox but rarely use it. Frankly I don't see a huge difference when doing general browsing. Some people will pick other browsers over IE just to snub the Microsoft Monopoly but I could care less. I will try the Firefox with extension AND smartFTP and let you know what I think. I have been using some generic FreeFTP recently. It's obviously easier than the old text-style FTP but I still want to find something that lets me browse, copy and paste, from and to the FTP folders, and even use drag-and-drop.
