Default Home networking

I did it once but for some reasons it's not working anymore.

I have 2 laptops and 2 desktops that I would like to put on a home network. All I see is the folders of the respective computers, they can't seem to be on the network at all. I remember it was under MShome network.

What did I miss???

make sure any folder or printer that you want shared on any computer is shared (right click it and choose Sharing and Security...).

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Yeah I did all that. I can see those folders on the computer itself but not from another computer.

Are all of the systems using XP?
Are all using the same domain/workgroup?

Restarted the router, and/or checked
the router's settings?

Yes all on XP

How can I check the router setup and what am I looking for?

This is more of a windows networking issue then a router issue. As long as DHCP is working properly on the router, and all the computers are all receiving an IP address and are able to connect to the internet, then it's set up properly.

Try pinging the other computers on your network, if you get a reply then the computers can see each other. Are you running any firewalls other then the windows firewall?

If you are behind a router, sometimes each computer's firewall can cause an issue, so you may want to try to turn off the firewalls. Also, I know you mentioned the workgroups, but double check them to make sure they are all the same (MSHOME). Right click My Computer, click properties, Click Computer Name tab and the workgroup is displayed in there...

There is also a 'setup a home or small office network' wizard in one of the left menus in My Network Places (which can be found in a left menu while viewing My Computer).

GL!

Disable it and see if that fixes your issue.

Router settings should be checked as well. If you're not sure what they should be, reset them to defaults.

Yes, it is more than likely a system setting issue rather than the router, but always good to check (and become familiar with the router settings).
