Default Gmail Toys

The December issue of Maximum PC is out and on page 57 is a great article about some add-on toys for Gmail.

The one I really like is called GmailDrive. It allows you to use your gmail storage as an Online Storage Vault. The Windows version of that is at :

www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm **Note...use download location 2 **

After it installs there will be a gmail drive icon in my computer.

It actually maps a network drive to your available gmail storage. Very Very Cool!!

There are a few other things in the article that I wasn't interested in. I would suggest buying Maximum PC. I always enjoy it.

I really liked the article too. I was surprised at the absence of Gmail Skins, however.

Anyway to use this as a file server so others can download crap from it?

No. It stores the files as e-mail attachments in your Gmail account.

Not really.
The only way to map to the space is if you have the login and password for the gmail account that is goes with. So I guess you could set up a dummy gmail ID and give the password to anyone you wanted to have access to the files on it. But I am sure that only one person at a time could log into it.

I've used this extension and one should note that once it gets too much traffic your account will get locked.

That was a rather important bit of information to leave out of the article LOL.

I'm uninstalling it as we speak.

I'm not quite sure at what extent they tested it, but since it makes very specifically formatted messages it's rather easy to trace who use it or not. Besides, who uses their e-mail to send themselves alot of huge e-mails then redownload them? :P You know, it's just too fishy not to be detected and to be allowed at a large scale.
If you want free storage, you can always use box.net or AMD LIVE! Media Fault.
