Default File Transfers Between Computers?

I have a crapload of music I need to copy to a different computer on my network. All my music is on my desktop, and I'd like to copy it over to my laptop. They are on the same wireless network. My desktop is running Vista and the laptop is running XP.

How would I go about this? Thanks!

On your laptop, create a folder on the desktop (name it whatever you want), right click it, hit properties.
Share it over the network (you could also just share the whole hard drive instead of just one folder), go to your main computer, hit start, click Computer, you should see the folder.
Drag and drop the music into the folder on your laptop, and watch it go.

Prior to all this...do NOT keep that much stuff on your desktop. Each song takes up your memory's footprint. Each song being 3-10M, a song collection directly on the desktop could be a huge amount of resources sucked up. It's not just in a file, but loaded onto the desktop for use.

First thing to move them could be more complicated than you want. Do you have a network, or just two computers that are able to be shared? Networking Vista and XP can take more work than should, but can be done. If you're not on a network and don't care to other than sharing these files, put in a CD-R or USB drive and just move it that way.

It still takes me half an hour per Vista machine to get them on the network. Once on the network, life is much better and can have a better computing experience from then on.

I'm just wondering if a network is even set up if this sharing isn't already obvious. If so take them off the desktop, put them in the shared docs that are already shared, and browse to the machine with the laptop. Don't share the root of a drive. Bad practice. But the shared folder should already be there, and no extra work needs done. Because before "My Computer", this should show up on "My Network Place". My Computer lists shares, not files and folders unless mapped to be a drive.

Haha, wow... you must have a LOT of music to transfer...

*cough* it wouldn't take as long to transfer if you had a quad with 12mb of cache.... *cough**cough*

Most of the music is in FLAC format... that's why.

Well, I have a new question... our internet connection is never stable. We have one wireless router (which we got from our ISP, AT&T) which supplys internet to 3 comps in the house, 2 laptops and 1 desktop. Every so often (maybe every couple hours) the connection will just "reset" and we will lose connection for a few minutes while it fixes itself. Like it just did that a few minutes ago, interrupting the music transfer.

What might be causing this, and is there a fix?

Probably just a piece. See if they'll swap you out for a new one. But lately even my nice 108MB/s Netgear has been doing the same thing. I've had to reset it 2-3 times a day for the last week.

So it's a faulty router?

Not necessarily. Upgrade firmware, make sure the router isn't heating.
