Default Dual Gigabit Uses ... Speed?

I gave away an older NAS and have one on order that has its own 10/100 switch. It will free up my gigabit switch and router.

My Mobo has 2 Gigabit Lans ... has anyone successfully used their dual Gigabit functionality with significant speed increase?

If there is significant speed increase in:
  1. Internet
  2. Remote Admin
  3. File transfers
Then I'm in ... I'll start a web search now ... but I guess I'm looking for some form of confirmation that their is paydirt for the effort of figuring out how to set up a dual gigabit lan to best maximize throughput.

Thanks ... TIA

PS: I already know how to hack a network teaming fatpipe and have the hardware and software to "collect" the neighborhood "wifi" signals and aggregate them and "marry" them to my 15 Mbps Fios ... I just don't need to and even if I did ... it wouldn't be worth that much effort. I don't want to do ICS either.

I am simply wondering if there are any packet tweaks or throughput tweaks that will tune up and make the one Gigabit lan ... maybe 20% faster with the adition of the second one and maybe prioritizing them for efficiency? I doubt it ... but I figure it is worth asking.

I can understand the need with a gigabit router and all other computers on the LAN using a gigabit connection as well... and the only real use I see with dual gigabit is a server box and/or double as a server firewall...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Large file transfers, transferring stuff over the network between my gigabit boxes is way faster than transfers between 10/100 machines.

Because both have a gigabit connection. A 100mbps connection will give the same results than a 1000mbps connection to your modem in terms of internet speed. The only thing you could do would be load balancing if you had more than 1 internet connection using both your gigabit NICs.

So, from reading through this thread, if I plug in Two ethernet cable's going from my mobo to my switch box (switch box is connect via one cable to the router) I will get faster Internet and/or File transfers?
Am I correct on this or am I just a bit confused?

Let's assume that you have 5 computers on your home LAN, all are connected to a gigabit switch, and in turn the gigabit switch is connected to a shared internet connection that has a maximum download speed of 10 MBps and a max upload of 5 MBps.

All of the computers use a gigabit NIC's.

All of your transfers/downloads within the LAN will be much faster.
Your internet (outside of your home network) is still only as fast as the modem, ISP, servers that you are being routed through and of course the final server providing you with content.

Confused. Read Dread's post just above mine for a perfect explanation of how you should use a gigabit router and gigabit connection.

Oooh, ok I think I'm understanding this better.
This is mainly for networks that have a lot of computers, we've only got 3 computers hooked up to our router (two of which are in my room with the s=5 port switch box). So hooking up two cables on my mobo won't help with anything because I'm already getting max speeds, but it wouldn't hurt to do it anyway right?

(ya know what, I'm probably still confused on this. Lol, I'm more "hands on".....)

no, if you hook up both wires, you will still only see the speed of one gigabit connection. The dual ports is primarily for multiple networks or internet connection sharing.
