| using fiber-optics for home users will be really expensive to set up to begin with and youve got to make sure the telephone exchange can handle all this extra traffic. Other than the price it sounds alright. a major company offering this is the first step to cheaper, high speeds for internet I suppose. | ||||||||||||||

| That's not really groundbreaking though. I just had my surewest FiOS line installed yesterday. That comcast service offers 50MBp/s download, and 5MBp/s upload.. Right now my line is 20mbp/s download, 20mbp/s upload, and I could have ordered 50/50 for $120, but this at $65/m is good enough for me.. Also, I would say that this IS infact news if they can bring these speeds to a coaxal cable that most everyone already has in thier homes, but it isn't as the article clearly says it uses FiOS as well. ![]() The way I understand how this technology works is that most of the network is fiber optic up until your house, where it gets converted back into cable, so you don't have to run fiber optics cables and stuff to your house. | that is a decent boost over DSL speeds... but my cable connection through Cox is 10Mb/3Mb for $35/mo and potential for up to 30Mb business connection through coax cable with a DOCSIS2.0 modem... wonder what kind of boost is possible with cable and DOCSIS3.0 ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | I drool over 20MB/s up and down. I have an unrestricted dry-loop and the best I can do is 10/4. I don't get Verizon FiOS in my area though, only surewest, but I'm glad because Verizon has a monthly bandwidth cap on thier Fiber network. Where as Surewest has no limitations beyond the normal "don't use our network for piracy" motto. ( or atleast that I know of right now) One more thing.. Comcast is a HORRIBLE ISP over all. My dad has comcast's fastest offerring right now in his area which I tested as 23MBp/s with dslreports' speedtest. Sometimes I'll bring my notebook over there and game online with his network, what I notice is that they throttle the internet speed constantly. It's kindof strange that at about 10PM or later, his internet goes at the speed it should, and during normal day hours the internet will be anywhere from 20kb/s download to 2000kb/s download randomly. Also, some games will be unplayable where as others are smoooooooooth. BF2142 online is unplayable on his network because my ping is always extremely high in every server, as well as Counter Strike: source, my ping goes from 20 to 999 depending on the time of day. So I personally would never trust comcast, and not to mention they've been investigated numerous times over this same cause, until they finally admitted it was true that they both throttle customer's internet, and strait up drop you if your using clients like torrent handlers. drew and not u, well I guess there are some small benefits to living in this overpopulated trash pile that is the capitol of California after all.. Verizon is digging up the streets around here and laying the additional resources needed for fios. They are offering TV, phone and 20\20mbps for 99.99\mo. As soon as it's available at my house we are getting it. I stopped and asked some workers when it was going to be available in my development and they said 6 months... Ever since I left Comcast it seems they have increased their download speed but still 5 years later, my friends who have it get a crummy upload, out of what's supposed to be 2mbps... Heck in 6 months I will be in NC in our new house, and I happen to be moving near Drew..... Where the new house is, some people have DSL(it depends how far up the mountain you are) and some have to get hughesnet satellite internet.... The homeowners association is trying to get Charter to run cable... I say forget cable and give us FIOS NOW>>> Quad Core Xeon 3210@2.8ghz GA-EP35C-DS3R 466FSB 2x1gb OCZ-1333 DDR3@1400MHZ Sapphire 4870 512mb GDDR5 2x Raptor 150 ADFD RAID 0--WD320YS RE 16mb Samsung SuperWritemaster 20x DVDRW X-Fi eXtremeGamer w\Logitech Z-2300 Silverstone OP650 54A 12v Rail Torture Rack--Custom Danger Den WCing Last edited by RangerXLT8; April 3rd, 2008 at 13:49. | |||||||||||||||
