| I have a DLink DGL-4300 router that I keep in my room and I've always ran wires to my living room for my wired switch, which is used for my gaming consoles and guest notebook PCs. Now I want to go wireless and need to find just the right network device that will allow my router to communicate wirelessly with it in my living room. The device should provide wireless and wired (4 ports are fine) connections. There were some nice AP / Bridges on newegg but I didn't expect the costs to be over $50. I know Fry's sell d-link wired access points for $15 ... could wireless be that much more? Please recommend! Thanks in advance - Ryan Note to self: Update sig with new computer specs! | Colonel Calamity | Why not just take away the equipment and start fresh... with something like this (link below) for example? Newegg.com - D-Link DGL-4300 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless Gaming Router - Wireless Routers Another idea is to get a basic wireless router and turn off the routing functions. This is how I have my network setup. I have a standard wired SMC router that goes to a wireless router (Belkin), but the Belkin has the routing/DHCP stuff turned off. You will find that any quality AP (access point) will run about the same price as a decent router. I prefer this way myself because of the main router ever bites the dust, you have a backup that can continue to work for wireless. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! I was thinking of getting this: LINKSYS WRT54G IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router - Retail 1) Because it's popular and proven stability. 2) Hacked Firmware to open many other features. and 3) It's only $39.99 from newegg. 4) And of course meets my needs. Would you guys agree? Note to self: Update sig with new computer specs! | F Ucn rd dis U mst uzUNIX | I'm with SB and PB here. Sell that b/g router on ebay and get the D-link 4500 or the 655, the later is on sale at best buy for $100 lately. Either that, or keep what you have. What's wrong with the 4300? The way I see your network, you have that wireless router, wires to the living room, a switch/hub, and now looking to add an AP. Why not ditch all that hardware for a much healthier single unit? 300Mb wireless N with extreme reach, 4 gigabit ports, and functions galore (no need to hack) on the DIR-655. It can easily be the root of a basic, yet powerful, home network. Feed the Xbox a gigabit wire, leave a blank RJ45 for future home theater use, feed your main computer a line, and you have one blank port...for Home Server or NAS. Everything secondary and not bandwidth intensive can feed off the radio. I say secondary, but the bandwidth is still awesome compared to even the 54GS' wired performance. I basically see adding complication to a network when it can all be done in one shot. The 54GS is popular because it's been around...a long time. It's nice, but not really all that looking back at it. Even with Sveasoft firmware, it's still lacking in features. |
